The sexiest tank in WW2. That's a beast of a tank. Only one thing. Engine. The engine is to weak for this tonnage. Maybach HL 230 P30 V12 was used on Panther (correct if I'm wrong) and that little bugger was only 25 tons lighter.
@doktorbimmer
10 жыл бұрын
The Tiger ausf. b was originally intended to be upgraded with the excellent 850hp fuel injected version of the HL 230, but the factory that manufactured the injection units was bombed and the upgrade was never implemented. also planned for use in the Tiger was the GT-101, a 1,500hp BMW Gas turbine engine and would have given the Tiger the best HP/ton ratio of any tank used in the war. It had already been installed and tested in a Panther chassis before the war ended, it was the worlds first turbine powered tank.

The World's First Modern Main Battle Tank or "MBT"
@HONORGUARD308
10 жыл бұрын
That is not what MBT stands for. . MBT is "Main Battle Tank". It refer's to a tank that is capable of replacing a light, medium and heavy tank as it has characteristics of all classes such as high speed and manoeuvrability of a light tank with the armour and fire power of a heavy tank. The Tiger II (KT) is not an MBT, it is a heavy tank. . No such MBT's existed during or shortly after WW2 as this idea for MBT's was yet to be conceived.
@doktorbimmer
10 жыл бұрын
HONORGUARD308 ah... No. Your knowledge of early MBT developement seems very limited. the MBT was conceived during WW2... The Tiger was actually designed before the term MBT was ever coined. An MBT IS a heavy tank... a fast heavy tank. The Tiger was the fastest heavy tank of the war... it pioneered most of the performance parameters of the MBTs that were to follow. Cheers!
@HONORGUARD308
10 жыл бұрын
doktorbimmer During WW2 and even shortly after tank's were designed and classed as either light, medium, heavy, super heavy, cruiser and tank destroyer. The concept of MBT's was rapidly expanded during the cold war. I know the Tiger tank's were designed and produced before the concept of MBT's that is why the Tiger tank's are not MBT's they are heavy tanks. The exact definition of MBT was conceived due to its ability to replace all past tanks with a single "MAIN" battle tank, the ability of obtaining characteristics of all predeceasing classes. You dont even know what "MBT" stand's for let alone the history of tank development and design, your original comment of MBT meaning MODERN battle tank (>wrong) is a direct contradiction of what you just said. It really doesn't matter what you believe the fact is the Nazi's designed both Tiger tank's as heavy tank's, official documentation proves this and a very fast research can prove that the KT was a heavy tank, NOT an MBT.
@doktorbimmer
10 жыл бұрын
HONORGUARD308 No, Germany, America even Britain during the war did not agree on or use the same classification systems or terms.... so your point is completely moot. MBT was a term that became synonymous with a class of tank first seen with the Tiger... a heavily armored, heavily armed tank with the speed and mobility of a light or medium tank... this is the definition of the term MBT The Tiger was the first modern tank as it is seen today.... and the first to combine the features that define the MBT Cheers!
@HONORGUARD308
10 жыл бұрын
doktorbimmer I know different nation's did not have the same classification's but they used them, the list I gave was some German, British and Americana classification's. I never said they used the same classification's. Again, you dont even know what MBT stand's for so it's not surprising you have no idea about the history. Im not even joking though, you can do a simple search and it will prove my point.

High-Velocity Armor Piercing. If I'm not mistaken this was basically the US designation for APCR. It's an armored piercing shell that is lighter overall so it achieves greater muzzle velocity but has a tungsten core penetrator, basically similar to a Sabot round, except that it doesn't loose the outer shell (sabot) after firing. US anti-tank units were outfitted with these and if I'm not mistaken the Super Pershing also had priority for them. Shermans usually only received standard APC or APCBC.

***** That i have never heard, but the T-34 was perhaps the most unreliable tank of the war. the V-2 engine was only designed to last 100hrs in service but the quality of the air cleaner system was so bad the engines rarely lasted even this long. The T-34 did have a famously unreliable transmission as well, the defect rate was so high that T-34 units were often fitted out with a spare (strapped down to the engine deck) if you search old photos you can sometimes spot them. another interesting fact about the T-34, the Diesel engine had no heater system to aid starting for winter use, crews had to build a camp fire under the rear hull and leave the hatches open to warm the engine enough to start.

Screw all the politics. It was a great tank and no matter what country you are from you have to admit you don't get the same feeling watching a Sherman or a Cromwell. It was and still is an amazing piece of technology.

i fully agree with you, i'm just saying they did have a power to weight ratio problem, the king tiger and jagdtiger had problems with the steering breaking down under the weight of these monsters, and the panther 5 couldn't handle its own top speed, but they were still miles ahead of the other tanks on the battles field, the biggest threat against them was their lack of numbers and design flaws

@gtaclevelandcity The high velocity 75mm on the Panther was more than adequate to defeat enemy AFVs. It was an extremely good gun.

It was a T-34/85 firing with extremely rare and power BR-365P which was an PCR shell, firing from an ambush position into the flank of the tanks. The 76.2mm F-34 couldn't even penetrate the side armour of the Tiger II with any normal round at point blank and even with it's rare APCR shell would have needed to get within 100m to have even a slight chance.

@Dreachon It was rather nimble but it does come at a price. They would often break down because the engine was too small for something that big and the tracks would deteriorate too quickly.

I visited the German Tank Museum in Munster. They have a Tiger 2 (what its factory name was). It's indeed gigantic. But a fact is also that the Kingtiger was built less than 500 times. So not that a big number that they were in a direct confrontation with a "tiny" sherman (which has been built over 50.000 times btw.) or other "dwarf" tanks constantly. They have also a Sherman tank in that museum. If I also hurt you, I apologize, too.

The engine in this tank is the same one used in both the Tiger I, and the Panther. It was over taxed in this vehicle, a fact that was overshadowed by the very poor transmission/differential. But it is pleasing to see one kept in running order.

I love how everyone got angry with my comment on the Tiger II. It really did break down a lot and you can hear it in this video. You can totally see how, what could have been an amazing tank, got let down. It was just simply too big to be properly run at the time. I'm not hating on the tank, but it's true.

@USExceptionalism The tank was able to get high speed but it was terrible for the driver and the suspension needed serious overhaul after long road marches. It also isn't a modified christie suspension but modified torsion bar.
@Dreachon

@USExceptionalism Actually the christie suspension was dropped after the T-34 and nations went for the torsion bar suspension. Christie suspension had several design problems.

Imagine being an American soldier armed with nothing but a rifle in the middle of a ruined town in the middle of winter, then seeing this thing rumbling towards you. Fucking terrifying dude.
