The traditional Finnish song "Käppee" performed by the newfound Norwegian choir Artemis on their spring concert "Reincarnation", april 2023.
In the Finnish song "Käppee" ("Useless"), we are introduced to an angry woman who has been forced to marry a useless alcoholic man. She is filled with rage towards the older women in the village, whom she believes conspired against her and are responsible for this arranged marriage.
"Käppee" reminds us of the importance of standing up for ourselves and fighting for our own happiness. The woman in the song, despite her anger and frustration, presents a strong image of resilience and inner strength. She refuses to accept her fate and insists on expressing her dissatisfaction towards the elders whom she believes have manipulated her life.
The song has gained popularity in recent times through the Finnish group "Värttinä" and the Polish group "Laboratorium Piesni."
We all have a useless person in our lives - who is your Käppee?
