I grew up in the same era as Alpo, albeit a different neighborhood, but the dynamics of the street were more or less the same. There was no reputable hood in NY where one person had everyone in absolute fear. Harlem was harlem before, during and after Alpo, he didnt make it what it is. thats not how this city works, especially back in the 70s and 80s. But you gotta remember that he was born in 1966 (same year as me) alot of the most dangerous people around him were locked up or already passed on. The ones that remained were more than likely civilians or middle aged Ex-cons who turned a new leaf. whatever grudge or issues they had with Alpo don’t outweigh the desire to retire and live comfortably.
