Hi Randy, I too have invested in a fairly expensive radio kit, but unfortunately the build is delayed while I save up for that crescent wrench. That reminds me, I’ve got to shop for a router as well. You have truly brightened my day and you certainly have a teacher’s soul. Thanks for your encouragement on studying for my license exams coming up this Saturday when you replied to my comment on your Icom IC-T70A video. I was amazed to see that pop up on my iPad!

What was it like in the future? Just getting into ham. Got some good info from two of our local clubs. It was hard for a noob to spot all the jokes but I got most of them. I see you made this almost 5 years ago. Now that you have lived with that rig for longer than most California marriages, how is it working? How do you use it ( field, base station, field day)? Do you use it for voice only or have you keyed some cw on it? the more detail the better. Thank you in advance. 73 de Ray.

Ray, I ended up selling the radio about a year after I built it. I really wasn't using it very much. The guy that I sold it to has used it a lot for voice, cw and digital. He is very happy with it. I know you don't really believe that Sherwood crap? There's a video on KZitem that does a comparison between the FT-817ND and KX3. The video shows how close the receivers are too one another and in some cases the FT-817ND hearing signals better than the KX3. Just saying hearing and seeing is believing! I'm sure the KX3 is nicer, but gotta out way some pro's and con's depending what you're using them for. 73!

Congratulation on passing your General. I think the new guys would have a better first experience on HF with a radio that has 100 watts. QRP and low power is a lot of fun, but the extra power will help you on the air. You are new, looking for contacts. Look at the Yaesu FT-857, FT-897, FT-450, Icom IC-718, IC-7200, IC-7410, and Kenwood TS-2000. All good radios, some even have 2M and 70 cm. All are 100 watts on HF. For your first antennas, string up a couple of dipoles for 20 and 40 meters.

The building and shooting the took about 6 hours. About 5 hours to get setup. I spend a lot of time trying to get buzz out of the audio when I used an extension cable for my mic. I even made a new cable using RG174, and still buzz. I gave up and used the wireless mic. Then another couple of hours to tear everything down. Editing took 4-6 hours. When finished I had a 5 GB file. I started to upload the file to youtube over my slow DSL it was going to take over 2400 minutes. Uploaded the next day.

That was fun to watch Randy. Looks like a very nice radio, hear a lot about them and it is always good. I tend to use those big hammers a lot when building kits, especially in the final testing phase. I also used to have one of those rectonium vapor power packs but it tended to overheat a lot and became gaseous so I got rid of it. Maybe that is the one you ended up with, lol. Keep it up, fun to watch and very informative. 73 wd0akx

Something like a FT-857 for around $850 is a great do everything radio in a small package. 100 watts on HF, all modes, and goes up to 70 cm. I have one of those too. If I only could take 1 radio to a remote location, I would probably grab my FT-857.
