Not sure where all the hate is coming from. 14 million of the K98 variants were produced so it’s not that rare for your run of the mill varieties. 250,000 of the Standard Modells were produced, but as a 2020 American Rifleman article listed this type of rifle in good condition as being worth $600. What he started with was a $100 parts gun that he made nice.
@ThePlatinumsquirrel

American rifleman can list the price as whatever they want (they often lowball). Reality is a Kar98, especially if it’s wartime production, normally runs 2000 dollars. There’s also the other fact that you’re missing here: sporterized rifles are always bastardizations.

He didnt murder a k98 he murdered a standard modell mauser which is much more rare.there arnt many that survive in any condition And as for sporting use there are thousands of already sportorized mausers out there that can be had for cheap that can modified to the users own personal prefrence. I own a m95 mauser my self that was done back sometime in the 1960s when mausers were plentiful cheap and just considered an old rifle. He didnt need to destroy a surviving all original example that is now highly sought by collectors.

Something is only worth the amount of value someone places on it. It’s his rifle. Maybe he likes it better this way. He made it like he wanted it to be. At least it’s being used. Before it was just sitting somewhere, gradually turning to a pile of rust. The rifle has an excellent bore and needs to be shot. Which do you prefer? Sporterized but being used or rusting away somewhere? We’d all prefer it to be restored to military condition but that wasn’t happening, was it?

In high school, during the 70s, the physical education teacher took us to a shooting range to practice with the Mauser 98. We would shoot lying down, with the butt of the rifle resting on our shoulder. In that position, you couldn't feel the recoil. We used 5-round combs. In front of the targets there was a pit, from where other comrades would mark the impact with a kind of long shovel.

Double set triggers allow you to carry a rifle with a vary light trigger pull in the field safely. A light trigger pull is good for accuracy, but it can be unsafe to carry a rifle with a light trigger pull loaded because if you drop the rifle or bump the rifle, it could go off. With double triggers, you can carry your rifle loaded, and then when you're ready to shoot, pull the first trigger whitch is usualy heavy to pull , which sets the fiering triger (the second trigger) to be supper light. Or you can simply pull the fiering triger and have a normal heavy trigger pull. Its all about accuracy improvement

Not passing judgment, just answering your question -- it was a war relic in original military spec that was permanently modified. To military collectors, it's sacrilege to make any permanent modification like that - it's a piece of history and they're not making any more of them. Some would go so far as to say aggressively sanding and rebluing it is wrong. If you want a modern bolt action rifle, there are plenty you can buy that will perform better out of the box and you didn't destroy a piece of history. Think of it kind of like car restoration guys that would turn their noses up at anything other than NOS/OEM parts. I think restomods are cool for cars but my stomach does turn a little when I see it done with firearms.
