This is an introduction to the social psychology of cults, presented at "നാം" conference of Freethinkers on 2.10.2022 at Alappuzha. Starting with the definition of a cult as " a group of people led and generally exploited by a charismatic and authoritarian leader who hold an extreme ( totalist) set of views", the presentation is divided into five sections. Section A explains that though cults may come in different sizes and ideological hues, the basic mechanism is same in nearly all of them. Section B emphasizes that cult members are ordinary humans, and that situation matters more than disposition. Section C argues that getting rid of religions would not automatically mean an end of cults or cultic behavior. Section D suggests that it is the "Totalist Environment" that makes a cult what it is. The final section briefly discuss the five dimensions common to nearly all cults, namely, the leader, the structure, the ideology, the process and the outcomes.
