The debut performance of Kadamb was held on June 22, 2024 featuring artists from both Austin and Dallas. Organized by the School of Indian Percussion and Music (SIPM), Kadamb is a name rich in significance to Shri Krishna's Natwari Nritya, Kathak. The Kadamb tree holds a special place in Hindu mythology symbolizing divine love, beauty, and strength, reflecting the profound spiritual and artistic themes that our performances aimed to convey. Specifically, it is a prominent locale in many tales of Lord Krishna. He plays flute under the Kadamb tree, his rendezvous with Radha is often in the broad shade of this wide canopied tree. Another deity who is believed to love staying in a forest of Kadamb trees is Goddess Durga; hence one of her poetic appellations is Kadamb-van-vasini. The presentation began with Durga Stuti, and was followed by Makea taal - a creative innovation of none other than Pandit Gourisankarji himself. He got the germ of the idea of this Taal when he realized that taals like Pancham Sawari have sections of 1.5 beats as part of its construct. But there are no taals which have sections with 2.5 beats. So as geniuses typically do, he just went ahead and constructed one.
The name of this Taal Makea is an homage to Gourisankarji lineage of gurus that includes the three maestros - Ustad Maseet Khan, Ustad Keramatullah Khan, and Ustad Allarakha Khan. This was followed by an Abhang (Rusali Radha Rusala Madhav) with abhinay taught by Smt Priyadarshini Govind that was set using Kathak vocabulary). The program concluded with a tarana in Puriya set in Teentaal (originally choreographed by Guru Maya Rao, and creatively expanded upon by Guru Akhila Rao).
The event was accompanied by the incredible Pandit Gourishankar ji on Tabla (SIPM) and his talented team of Shri. Sameer Kotasthane on Harmonium and vocals and Maestro Indradeep Ghosh ji on Violin. Sunaina Rao, Swarangi Potdar, Rujula Sharma, Megha Rao, Neha Deosthali, and Anaya Kashikar are dedicated Kathak dancers based in Dallas and Austin, each with unique journeys and accomplishments. All of them have trained at Kathak Rhythms under the able guidance of Guru Akhila Rao.
