I feel very fortunate and excited to add this horn to the collection. This is the Kahlenberg KM-110. The horn has a fundamental frequency of 110Hz. Since 2003 I have traveled on over 20 cruises. I always try to make sure I’m in the right place at the right time to hear the horn. Ever since I started collecting train horns I would periodically search for types of ship horns. I would spend a lot of time searching for photos and reviewing documentation by manufacturers. I began focusing mainly on trying to find out which horn is installed on the CCL Glory and HAL Rotterdam having traveled on those ships recently. Being single tone horns it was easy to determine the frequency. The difficult part was trying to figure out what manufacturer horn is used and if they were air powered, piston driven, etc. Based upon some close up photos we were able to get I believe the Glory is fitted with a Kockums 150/110 horn. Virtually identical with a slightly different construction as it is a different manufacturer. Since the Kockums horns are manufactured in Sweden and Kahlenberg horns are manufactured here in the US, I figured it would be easier to obtain the KM-110. I’m aware that ship horns may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think this thing is totally awesome. A complete powerhouse of a horn. I guess I have a weird way of connecting my horns with past memories of travel with my parents and brother. Well, here is my first audio of the KM-110. I did setup my TASCAM DR40 to record audio as well but the horn completely blew out the microphone and the audio wasn’t salvageable. I was an idiot and didn’t have the input settings right. More to come. I’ve included some audio of the Rotterdam and Glory horn for reference.
