The first orchestral cover for this year is "Kaibutsu" from YOASOBI! I'm excited to be back with new shiny orchestral libraries (and switched to using Cubase), so you'll probably notice an upgrade to my production quality.
In this arrangement, I wanted to illustrate the journey of coming to terms with the inner conflict of fighting to stay true to one's ideal. The first half of the arrangement is slightly more tame (light strings; subdued playing) to illustrate uncertainty, which is contrasted by the latter half because I gradually incorporate more intense percussion and brass from the first chorus and onwards.
I imagined 1:37 to represent the inner conflict with one's self-doubt. The constant metronome-like rhythm from the wood block illustrates the constant presence of intrusive thoughts, which gradually speeds up building up tension and restlessness. By doubling the melody with woodwind and incorporating low woodwinds and brass, the tension builds up to the point where it becomes unbearable. All of the built-up tension suddenly vanishes and undergoes a brief moment of stillness at 2:10. The chorus melody is repeated by a solo flute, while the harp and oboe provide minimal harmony and quiet counter melody evoking a sense of self-reflection. I wanted to showcase fragility, and how build-up of anxiety and self-doubt can lead to a breakdown. But the arrangement eventually picks up again, and finally, we transition to a triumphant grand finale.
In the final section, I imagine someone gathering enough courage and resolve to confront the whole world to stay true to their seemingly impossible ideals.
