Just wanted to express gratitude to you, showing us all of these pens. It's so wonderful to get to see what these pens are like without having to buy them! I'm so used to how you write... seeing you write the first few strokes with that EF nib, I knew right away it was a WOW nib :) Thanks again Chris, take it easy!

I'm happy I watched this before buying. The purple one looks almost black on store pages, which I liked, but it looks a lot brighter here. Still looks nice and I'm sure most people would like this more, but it's not my taste. Funny, I thought the blue was my least favorite of the five, but now it may be my favorite. 😳

Altogether correct about this one at about $22--medium nib is fantastic, comparable to Jowo/Narwhal Ranga at $70 now. Fine and XF are said to be fairly broad as well, and wet, a plus. I have two and one more coming--one arrived without finial--they should pack a little better when coming all the way from China. Writes first time every time--no competition at all for Kaigelu 316 at $22. Don't know how China made this nib at this price--outstanding.

@@chrisrap52 It was in my comment on the MoonMan c3 video. As the c2 came with both number 5 and number 6 nibs, although I only got the number 6 nib model. One for myself, and another later as a gift, along with a sampler of Iroshizuku inks, and ink syringe it made for a nice ink dropper package. I see now some listings also seem to offer the c2 with fude/bent nib. In general having used the number 5 on the few of their older smaller pens I wasn't that impressed, but the number 6 is pleasant. The broad/stub nibs that came with the S5 are OK, although not as smooth as other stubs I experienced, still a nice option, just that crystal roll stop is a bit gauche.

Chrisrap and the case of the missing threads, well done. Nice save on the EF nib, looked sprung, an impressive writer. Ironic that the threads were a problem and the upshot was fewer turns, your favorite. The 316s are really nice, thanks!

I noticed that at 12'32" in the video you can see a gap between the tines that runs all the way to the tip. Guess that's why it is writing so wetly? Or maybe you sprung it a bit when it railroaded? Anyway, I really like your views and encourage you to keep them coming!

It wrote wet before I exceeded the elastic limit. Due to the wet Noodler's Ink as much as the nib. I don't recommend anyone pushing the nib that much. But I was able to fix it & haven't sprung it again. Thanks for watching.

@@chrisrap52 So far I have always postponed the purchase of Kaigelu precisely due to problems of jumps in writing reported by other collectors. To me it was for pre-2019 models, but Rob of Fountain Pen Journey had problems with a 2019 Kaigelu production. I also understand that yours are Kaigelu 316A not S. In any case I never make it derive from the malfunction of one of my pens negative reviews for that type of fountain pen, but I do research on it.

I've found that the writer, ink and/or paper has a great impact on the writing. I've changed inks & papers & found that nibs write much differently. Also many nibs can be improved with a little smoothing. Then there is the variation in all nibs from all makers. Expression "Your mileage will vary" applies.

@@chrisrap52 I fully agree with what you highlight and despite my little experience I confirm that all the factors you have highlighted change the performance of a fountain pen. I have only been interested in fountain pens since 2002, but the world of Chinese fountain pens has been revolutionized since 2017. All the more reason your technical analyzes are very important and very interesting, as they have the ability to bring out the soul from an assembly of components that every time it fascinates us, whatever the performance of this magical instrument ...

I got a Pelikan M 200 Pastel Green yesterday for 150 USD.. It looks gorgeous and writes well, but so do these Kaigulus at a fraction of the price I paid for M200.. So, this question “Are we paying such a heavy premium just for the brand ?” keeps haunting me !!!
@sillypinkmate

Must have something to do with boasting the brand's legacy that they have their name everywhere and often associated with "good quality pens", and expect customers to pay for it....... I believe chinese pen manufacturers are really up to the market right now. Despite concerns over "uninspiring" or even "copycat" designs, they actually DO something on their pens in performance, engineering & build quality, as well as the good looks, all of these qualities in relatively affordable price points. Not all of chinese brands are consistent in their products, but hey we don't have to pay twice or thrice the price for a more well-known product that can suffer the same quality control issues..... I mean pelikan ain't too bad, but yeah I'm still reluctant to pay for their pens, especially for steel nibs. Say.... parker and their current reissued P51, that pen, well..... writes, but a jinhao 85 also does the same in performance and feel for like several times cheaper than that reissued P51.....

I have a V1 316, which I really like, but after a few years, the black finial and end cap has become pitted. Maybe it was always this way and I never noticed. I have a green V2 on the way. The all acrylic construction should help. Instead of crinkling cellophane, could you try squeaking styrofoam?

I have to say, though I may be in the minority, I like the version one Kaigelus better than the lighter version two pens. I got the olive green one, and after seeing your blue one I ordered that one. It arrived with a big horizontal crack in the section a AND the cap was not glued together. After seeing your thread problems on your purple pen, I’m starting to wonder if quality control is on vacation! Of course, the dealer has already shipped a replacement pen-and patience is a good lesson to learn! Are your eyes all healed from your surgery? Thanks, as always, for all the videos.

Two different pens. The 480 is classic slim cigar shape while the 316 is a chunky flat ended pen. Build quality comparable, not a deciding factor. PenBBS RM similar to Kaigelu M. EF & F different. Either pen you get will be a great pen.
