Scenes from the 1952 movie, "Steel Town," where "Red" McNamara (played by Ann Sheridan) and Steve Kostane (played by John Lund) get a tour from Jim Denko (played by Howard
Duff) of the fictional Kostane Steel works. Much of it was filmed on location at the now long-gone Kaiser Steel works at Fontana, California. Note the car seen in this clip, for obvious reasons, is a 1951 or 1952 Kaiser. Seems to be burning oil based on what appears to be blue smoke coming from the tailpipe!.....perhaps the piston rings on the Continental designed 226 L-head engine hadn't fully been worn in with the cylinders of what was probably a low mileage Kaiser.
This is a great vintage flick if you'd like to get a sample of what U.S. steel production was like in the early 1950's. Wonderful shots of blast furnaces and rolling mills, but the open-hearth shop takes the honors in this movie with the furnace charging and tapping scenes. The storyline is OK staring Sheridan, Lund and Duff. If you ever get the opportunity to see this movie (still not available on DVD), watch for scenes that include period Kaiser vehicles. The Kaiser Steel mill was in operation from 1942 to about 1982. American industrialist, Henry J. Kaiser, had the mill built at Fontana, CA (about 50 miles east of Los Angeles) to help supply World War II, west coast steel demand and his Kaiser shipyards with plate steel to build U.S. Liberty Ships. Today, the Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) and California Steel Industries occupy the former Kaiser steel mill grounds.
