I'm surprised you didn't discuss Wilhelm's relationship with his mother more. Letters between Princess Victoria and Queen Victoria show how Princess Victoria was repulsed by Wilhelm's disability and emotionally rejected him. After years of forcing her son to go through pointless "treatments" to cure his arm, she distanced herself and privately called him a cripple. I think his mother' lack of affection damaged him more than the arm itself.

Actually, many conflicts throughout Europe (and for that matter, the whole world) from the middle ages up to the early twentieth century were essentially wars between royal houses. They fought over issues such as succession, honour and family feuds. That was one of the principle reasons why republics became increasingly popular around that time.

Your thumbnail biography of the man does not really do him Justice. First you claim that he rebelled against what he believed to be his parents favoritism of liberal British policies. If you had read any historical accounts of Prince Frederik and Princess Victoria you would have understood that they went there specifically to try to reshape the Prussian monarchy to resemble that of a monarchy favored by Albert Victoria's late husband she was herself most vocal of her distaste for most things German. She constantly compared and berated German actions against British actions and always found Germany wanting. Bismarck played Wilhelm. His idea was to set son against parents hoping to create friction. You were correct it was his hope that she would Wilhelm ever Ascend the throne that he would then be able to control him as was evident he was not successful. Wow Wilhelm did attempt to repair some of the damage he had done he was of course I'm successful. You lay a great deal of blame on the so-called Naval arms race. What you fail to mention is that by the early nineteen hundreds 1911, 1912 Germany had butthole acquiesced to the fact that British Naval superiority would be a fact Upon hearing the demands placed by the austro-hungarian empire to Serbia vilhelms response was to call it a spirited note. When Serbia acquiesced to all the demands save the fact that Austria-Hungary would conduct the investigation inside Serbia proper, vilhelm noted that that dissipated all grounds for war. Vilhelm and Germany were not responsible for World War 1 that was actually count Von holtzendorff the then Austria-Hungary and foreign minister. perhaps you should read Dreadnaught, and castles of Steel to give you a better perspective

When Princess Victoria arrived in Germany after her marriage she was treated like dirt by just about everyone. Her loyalty to Frederik remained throughout her life. However, on his death the Kaiser virtually kept her a prisoner and mistrusted everything she tried to do. Albert was an idealist who tried to create a Europe free from conflict by way of inter-marriage with his children. Had it not been for Q. Victoria's doctors both Vicki and her son would have not survived childbirth and it's aftermath. Vicki did not dislike Germany per-se it was the treatment given her by the royal court and Bismarck. When Q. Victoria tried to persuade her to return to the UK she told her that, 'she was now German and her life was there.

Funny, I just heard some excerpts from a book by Christina Croft. She refutes much of the information in your video. The forst 25 years of his reign was peace and prosperous. A war would destroy the progress that had been gained. The Kaiser tried to avoid war up to the last. Sending letters to his Uncle Edward, the king of England and cousin Nicky, the Tsar. The Kaiser hated Hitler. He thought Hitler was his complete opposite. Wilhelm said the Reich soulless and could have never created a Culture.

13:24 You are implying, that the German people were not in support of their Kaiser after the war. That is wrong! Let me explain: The first memory of my grandmother (from Saarbrücken), was when she got her shoelaces tied by her crying mother. My grandmother has never seen her mother cry. So she asked what it was. Her mother answered: "Der Kaiser hat abgedankt" (The Kaiser has abdicated"). It might sound weird, but after the war was lost, the Kaiser gave them a sence of savety and continuety, after all, it is everything they have ever known. A party, called DNVP that was in favour of reinstateing the Kaiser as the head of State was one of the strongest partys in the Weimar Republik.

Especially not the Marine Corps, who for all its faults(I love the Marine Corps, don’t get me wrong), honors Marines of high decorations(Chesty Puller, Dan Daly, etc) with their stories and the histories of the battles they were in, but Maj Gen Butler who received two MoH’s has been limited, at least in the classes I’ve had, to only being known by that. It would make for an interest biographic to say the least.

Imagine in the alternate timeline where Wilhelm II had a son during his exile and years later in WW2 as Germany began to lose the war and Hitler's inability to lead the people, Wilhelm's son(who hated the Nazis for brutality & oppression towards both Jews and Germans who did not support them) will mobilize his own army and created a German Civil War between Nazi loyalists and the Royalists led by Wilhelm's son. That would be so great and altered the timeline where Germany could have their own constitutional monarchy rule like Great Britain does and never split into West Germany & East Germany.

By 1914 Europe had divided itself into two power blocks. A circumstance often blamed on Berlin and especially on Wilhelm II. Two powerful "blocks": Germany/Austria-Hungary in a Dual Alliance (with the "sorta"-partner Italy joining later), and on the other side France/Russia in a military alliance with their "sorta"-partner GB. These two blocks are often conflated or talked about as being the effects of the same logic and reasoning, or even more fallacious, that the first logically lead to the second (causation). Only one was a result of necessity. The other was voluntary, without a real need. "However, the impact of these decisions [edit for clarification: effects of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1878] had serious consequences on German-Russian relations, as Tsarist officials blamed Germany for allowing England and Austria-Hungary to win major concessions at the Congress (edit: more on that later). And despite a long-standing friendship, the Tsar threatened a war of retaliation against Germany. This sudden crisis helped solidify the growing close relations between Germany and Austria-Hungary, and in October 1879, a defensive alliance was signed by the two German powers. This would prove to be the first alliance in the slow build-up of tensions leading to World War I." AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Kenneth Allen Shafer for the Master of Arts in History presented June 29, 1989. Title: The Congress of Berlin of 1878: Its Origins and Consequences *Bismarck had to act because of a specifically voiced threat (note: no "feelings" involved).* There was no choice. Re. the second "block": Some 20 years after her ill-fated attempt to torpedo Bismarck's German unification process with a preventive war (aka "war of choice") in 1870, the emotions caused by this war had died down somewhat, and Paris was given a "test" by Berlin's new management (Wilhelm/Caprivi): the choice between better relations with Germany (aka "rapprochement") as evidenced by a "New Course" in Berlin after 1890, or expanding her own power by an alliance with another European empire. Paris' choice was not quite unexpected. According to the "101 rules of empire building", states have the possibility to increase their power by alliances. And that is what Paris did the minute they were "released" from their political isolation. No sooner than they had found their "new friends" in St Petersburg, and the new power it afforded, than Paris indulged in a more confrontational course against British expansionism, including threats of war, in SE Asia (see 1893). The treaties made by Bismarck were not aimed at any expansion nor did it have an aggressive intent. Wilhelm took over these treaties in 1888 because they already existed. After 1890, Wilhelm II did not extend the Reinsurance Treaty because he wanted better relations with all neighbors: Russia, France and GB. The Reinsurance Treaty had stood in the way of better relations because it isolated France. Wilhelm ended this isolation hoping it would result in a "new course" (under Caprivi) with "simplified/better relations". Unlike the events leading to the Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1878, France/Russia were not threatened by the "Neuer Kurs" (Caprivi). The often claimed "German threat" by "nasty Wilhelm" was simply a convenient smokescreen for Paris/St Petersburg to hide their real intentions (ulterior motive). *So why did they ally, stating a very specific course of action for the event of an (entirely fictional since never threatened) "German/A-H mobilisation"?* Because such an alliance was "de facto" also directed against GB/Empire, and such mobilisations were only plausible in the event of an Anglo-German Alliance resulting due to better understanding between London and Berlin (potentially possible after a good start offered by the Helgoland-Zanzibar Treaty in 1890). Fact? Wilhelm never threatened either France nor Russia, but he did hope for a deal or an accord of sorts between Berlin and London, which aroused suspicion in Paris/St Petersburg. Christopher Clark devotes an entire chapter (with sources) as to how this unfolded in his book Sleepwalkers.

The more authoritarian German government is often criticised in hindsight (historian fallacy). Germany was a constitutional monarchy, with limited democracy for "normal" people. That can of course be criticized from a modern perspective, but most other countries at the time weren't better either. Most were far worse. Germany's government was a reflection of its surroundings, its *geographical disadvantage* in terms of grand strategy in Central Europe (google "situational dispositioning"). Re. the military influence on the Berlin government: it was certainly not unique either. A reality which many historians today also forget to criticize. Russia, Serbia and other capitals had similar "decision making shortcuts". In Berlin the military decision makers had no or little parliamentary oversight and it was left to a few strategists to determine "war" or "no war". Again it is easy to criticize using modern criteria, but also easy to understand when using the valid facts at the time: Germany was the only European country threatened by a 2-front war, *so that a rapid chain of command* was in response to the circumstances at the time (geography). Cause and effect. If there was a war in Europe, countries like GB could afford to debate for a few weeks (an island). The same is also true for France or Russia which had no "2-front war"-danger, and Paris-St Petersburg could also afford a slightly slower reaction time. The authoritarian attitude and the "short decision making routes" was largely determined by geography. With less warlike and imperialist neighbours, especially Russia (see below comments), Germany could also have afforded to, and would have transformed to a more pure form of democracy earlier and volutarily. Here we should use biblical logic which says "do not judge unless one is in the shoes of the one being judged". That is what the Bible as a moral compass suggests, in efforts to avoid "sowing seeds"...

The Dutch government was in exile in 1941 and no Dutch authority could give or refuse Hitler permission for anything in the occupied Netherlands. It was the Kaiser's last wish to be buried in the Netherlands and for his body not to be returned to Germany until the monarchy is restored there. The Nazis must have respected the emperor's last wish, but that has nothing to do with the Dutch authorities. They had no power. The Netherlands were occupied and completely under German rule.

I have to agree with a lot of comments here stating Wilhelm is not the sole responsible. Just open Martin Gilberts "The First World War" book. You can't get a better literature when it comes to understanding the complexity behind WWI's breakout. Wilhelm is not a saint, he is also responsible for all those dead people, but he is not alone in this. Von Hötzendorf, Kaiser Franz Joseph II, von Hindenburg and especially Ludendorff are all people to blame big time! Would strongly advise to check and do a video on Ludendorff. You'll be surprised how much of a monster he was at the end.

Franz Joseph did not like Kaiser Wilhelm a lot, in fact, he called him a Joker. However, Kaiser Wilhelm was friends with Franz Joseph's nephew, Franz Ferdinand, and when the assassination happened, the Kaiser told Franz Joseph that if he declared war on Serbia, he would help. So one could say that Kaiser Wilhelm's assurance that he would back Franz Joseph is what caused World War I rather than the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.

Russian mobilization in support of a peripheral ally that they didn't share a border with and a war that posed them no threat is a major red flag however. Russian mobilization caused the war directly. Russia meddled in Austria-Hungary's business for imperialistic reasons, nothing more, and everyone paid the price.

@@mitchrichards1532 As everyone says, World War I does not have any simple reason. Franz Ferdinand's assassination and Russia's mobilization may have become the triggers, but the First World War can be traced back in infinite ways. It could be the fault of Austria, Germany, the Ottomans, Russia, France, or even the Americans. World War II, on the other hand, that was entirely Hitler's fault.

@@mikeor-Archduke Franz Ferdinand's Assassination was a Alarming Cause, Austria-Hungary's Declaration of War was a Trigger Cause, the Russian Imperial Mobilizations was a Influential Cause, the Refusal of Canceling Mobilization was a Direct Cause, and the Declarations of War by the Russian Empire to Both Germany and Austria-Hungary was the De Facto Cause.

@6:24 "Wilhelm was intent on extending the territorial borders of Germany"? What references are there for this, eg, letters, speeches, etc? Wilhelm certainly wanted colonies in Africa and Asia for Germany, but from which of Germany's neighbors, specifically, did he want to take territory? Not asking, to defend him, just curious, because I never heard of this.

As much as I like your videos, this is pretty biased against Wilhelm. He was emotionally abused by his mother and Bismarck, and never got love from anybody until he met his wife. While he can be blamed for a part of WWI, he was a perpetual victim of his childhood traumas.

Yes, Hitler, you are. Also: Hitler never called himself Emperor, and he never established a bloodline, so he was no Monarch, but only "Führer" and "Reichskanzler". While it was named the Third Reich (which was an informal name), the republican constitution never had been abolished / replaced, so it was still a republic.

@@jamesclendon4811 Exactly so. A very interesting lady, Princess of Schonath and Reiss Greuz. She met the kaiser before the war. When he was in exile her son wrote a letter of support to the kaiser, who invited them to visit him. Hermine went alone, fell in love and they married. She died just after the last war, influenza, after being imprisoned by the Russians. I am actually writing a book about her.

My guy was pen pals with Nicholas the second, good chums with Franz Ferdinand and really hated Edward the seventh, and in my opinion was a scapegoat. And wdym he was wanted to increase the borders, he had the perfect chance in 1905 to take the rest of Poland during the first Russian revolution, and yet he didn’t. The urging Austria hungry to invade Serbia was a decision made by the ministers and when he found out he got a letter ordering them to cease the order but the letter arrived too late after Franz Joseph signed the letter approving invasion after being given false information that the Serbs were already attacking back.

10:32 1.) Those are NOT battleships, the larger ship in the photo is A V-25 class torpedo boat, more specifically she is SMS V-43, she was scuttled during WW1 raised and transferred to the United States Navy from 1920-1921, when she was sunk as a target ship. 2.) She is also NOT a German war ship in the photo since she is flying the American Naval Jack off her bow, with would make her an America ship like previously outlined in the first point.

Elisabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt was beautiful. Acvording to a number of books i read, NOBODY, including the Kaiser WANTED WW1. Wilhelm apparently thought was avoided when Serbia acceded to Austria's demands, but an Austrian diplomat named von Huttendorf (spelling?) enginereed it despite the Serbian capitulation.

Not a historian here, but i red that his mother hated him, because of his deformaty, in those days they still thought that a physical deformaty also ment a mentality deformaty. He got treatment after treatment for his arm by doctors and kwaks. He was put away for shame. Afterwards he had a love hate relationship with is mother, and almost everything. He admired and loved queen Victoria, waiting at her death bed. He fled away in his military, where he find his friends, but also their ideas..
