In June 1981 Natalia Kosorukova, a student of the Moscow Geological Exploration School, came to Yakutia to join the Amakin expedition. Less than a few days later the girl, having moved away from the camp literally a few meters, disappeared. She didn't show up at the camp either at lunch or in the evening. She didn't come the next morning either. At first, they waited for her, and then started the search. Only after 25 days, when they wanted to end the expedition, she was found. The exhausted girl was lying 75 km away in a straight line from the location, where her tent was. People, who were looking for her, noted the miraculous rescue with shots from flare guns. And then it was assumed that the city girl simply was not able to navigate and find her way back.
But the ability of reindeer herders to navigate in tundra is almost legendary. Some even attribute the talent to find their way in the dark, in the snowstorm to the supernatural abilities of indigenous peoples.
