Indonesian Architects Week @ Rio 2021 (IAWR2021)
The Indonesian archipelago is a constellation of diversity and variability. Through IAWR 2021, we aim to understand how this presumed diversity correlates and interacts within/among itself. In imagining a place, architects are required to adapt, imitate, preserve, co-opt, or even demolish an existing structure-both tangible and intangible. Nothing is ever pure. In a world linked through fiber optics, we do things faster but are more prone to slip into misinterpretation. A misconstruction of meaning? Perhaps. But we nod along to estrangement and alienation. To what extent are we conscious of this? How do we make an architecture of the familiar/unfamiliar? What does this archipelago look like today?
IAWR 2021 seeks to shine a light on the reality of architectural practice and discourse in the world’s biggest archipelagic nation, with all its intertwining diversity in methodologies, cultures, values, and other variables.
Curated by Artiandi Akbar and Kamil Muhammad, IAWR 2021 features 66 works from Indonesian architects in forms of maquette, audio visual presentation, and text regarding the details of the work.
