Yay in today's video I'm going to talk about Kalanchoe and Calandiva, also known as Flower of Fortune.
You've probably already had one and after it finished flowering you didn't know how to take care of it and thought about discarding your little plant... but don't do that, it's a succulent that blooms again several times if you grow it the right way.
LIGHT
The ideal condition is receiving at least 4 hours of sunlight every day, but it can also be in full sun, that is, receiving sun all day long.
CULTIVATION PLACE
It can be planted directly in the ground (in flower beds) or in pots combined with other plants or alone. It looks beautiful grouped together, highlighting its floral effect.
WATERING
To know the right time to water, just touch the soil to feel the humidity. Only water if the soil is dry. We must direct the water on the substrate and avoid wetting the leaves and flowers so that they do not rot or become a favorable place for the proliferation of fungi and diseases.
PROBLEMS
A very common problem is related to watering: if the plant's leaves are yellow, limp or falling apart, this is a sign that you are watering too much. In this case, wait longer to water your plant.
Also check that the substrate has good drainage, because sometimes we think the soil is dry but in the lower layers the soil is very wet as it does not allow water to pass through.
Another common problem is the plant withering due to lack of water (you don't need to wait for the soil to dry out). If the leaves are fallen, wrinkled, showing the leaf veins, it is signaling that you are thirsty! Small pots, as they have a small amount of substrate, dry out faster and therefore need extra attention when it comes to watering.
But if it has nothing to do with watering, your plant is properly hydrated and is still withering, it could be being attacked by pests: aphids and scale insects that suck the plant's sap.
In this case, do a general cleaning of the plant, remove dry leaves and flowers, apply a pesticide, I suggest if it's at the beginning, use detergent syrup that I already taught here on the channel, I'll leave the link pinned in the comments for you to watch afterwards, but if the infestation is large, you can apply a ready-to-use insecticide based on neem oil.
Remember to repeat the application until 100% of the pests are eliminated. A single application will not solve it.
Another problem that I've seen happen was with dust mites. These tiny pests make small lesions on the leaves and envelop the plant like a web. Unfortunately, if left untreated, they can kill the plant.
This problem occurs most often in periods of very low air humidity, or plants that have undergone prolonged water stress, that is, have not been watered for a long period. For this problem, apply acaricide (purchase ready-to-use) and pay attention to watering correctly.
HOW TO RECOVER
The first step for the plant to stay healthy and encourage new blooms is to remove all the flower stems when they become unsightly. Use scissors and cut them all close to the base. This will focus the plant's energy on new growth of leaves and flowers.
Another issue is moving the plant to a larger pot, or with a new substrate and more nutrients. During flowering, the plant needs a lot of energy and this soil ends up being depleted. So this is the time to move the plant to a pot or to the ground.
FERTILIZING
And to finish the combo for the Kalanchoe to bloom again, we need to fertilize our plants. In this case, I alternate maintenance fertilizers with flowering fertilizers. These plants flower mainly in autumn and winter when the days are shorter.
So, from approximately April to July, you can apply fertilization for flowering 1x per month in the amount recommended on the manufacturer's label, and for the rest of the year, maintenance fertilization 1x per month.
Now it's time for you to tell me in the comments if you already knew that you could grow Kalanchoes and Calandivas for many years and that they would bloom again.
