Nia, this was in May of '96. It would be his last public performance at the "Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards". After this he was hospitalized. The guys who joined him were the remaining members of The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, who he'd started his career as a kid with his brother Skippy (since passed). This had a huge effect on seasoned entertainers, like Keali'i Reichel (shown) to those watching on TV. It his "Aloha" performance. It still gives my "chicken skin" and tears to this day.

if anyone is interested.. this was IZ's last live performance. The 3 who came up on stage, to his right was Moon( brother in-law), to his left were members of the Makaha Sons( the Koko brothers). They were on no speaking terms since IZ's departure of the band and start of his solo career. The Hawaiian in the audience that was shedding tears they kept panning to is Keali'i Reichel. This was a historic night in Hawaiian music as the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau finally reach reconciliation with braddah IZ. I was to young to remember this, but my pops, a Kanaka, 3rd generation, born and raised Lahaina says that this night was more memorable than his wedding night

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (Braddah Iz) 5/20/1959 - 6/26/1997 (38 years old) I was born in 1985 in Honolulu, Hawaii. My earliest memories ever are putting in a cd my father owned, titled “MAKAHA BASH 3 - LIVE AT THE SHELL - MAKAHA SONS of NI’IHAU”. I surprisingly still remember that was my first introduction to your music. I must have been no older than 6 years old at the time. I remember long drives from our house in Waipahu to my father’s parents house in Kahuku to visit them on the weekends. We would listen to either of two cassette tapes. Hawaiian Style Band, or Braddah IZ. I remember when you passed away, the whole island was mourning. It was a HUGE thing. My parents were in attendance of the spreading of your ashes. You could hear cars honking from anywhere on the island. I was a little too young to grasp the severity of it all. Looking back at it, it was by far the most notorious heartfelt passing in the State of Hawai’i, ever. Bigger than the passing of Daniel K. Inouye. I’d imagine comparable to Princess Diana to the UK. Fast forward to the youtube generation. I remember the first time I saw this video, I bawled my eyes out. I must have watched this video over twenty times and I ALWAYS get teary eyed. We wish you were here today. Now you are not just a household name in Hawai’i. You are a worldwide name. Your music has played in countless movies and commercials, and UFC hall of fame has walked out to your music before going to war. I wish I could have seen you perform live. Duane ‘The Rock’ Johnson always speaks of “mana”. Most people outside of Hawai’i don’t know what this means. All they need to do is watch this video, or listen to your music. You are still the shining gem of the Hawai’i music industry. You were a righteous and gentle giant. Your voice has touched people across the world. You paved the way for so many and brought joy to even more. You spoke the truth, you made us laugh, you made us smile, you brought people together, you gave us permission to forgive, you made us cry. If only our elected leaders of Hawai’i shared just a fraction of the Aloha spirit you shared, we’d be in a better place. Your fan, Adrian
