It is a dance visualization of the wonderful chivalrous act of Lord
Krishna quelling the deadly serpent Kalinga and dancing with his tender
lotus like foot on the hoods of the serpent Kalinga. In the 16th chapter ,
10th canto of the Bhagavatham , Lord Krishna is described as "Akila Kala
aadhi Guru "-- The original master of all arts.
The choreography begins with little Krishna playing ball with his
friends along the banks of river Yamuna and Krishna enters the waters of
Yamuna to encounter the great serpent Kalinga. The five hooded serpent
is shown to be equally powerful , but Lord Krishna in his ever blissful
state tackles the serpent's tantrums at ease, he even dances merrily
when the serpent coils around him , and finally in the line ' mandass' he
catches hold of the serpent's tail and thus Krishna quells the Serpent's
ego and arrogance. At the end, Lord Krishna displays his versatile
artistic skills by gracefully dancing on Kalinga to the entire Vrindavan.
The essence of Kalinga Narthanam story of Lord Krishna is to be
interpreted in a much similar manner for the human kind. Our own
human mind is like this great serpent which keeps tossing here and
there for wants and needs, for its own negativities of greed, jealousy,
desires ,pride, of being cynical, critical and complaints, which
also leads to anger , ego and arrogance thus leading us to a kind of depression, but God is always watching us how virtuous we are , if we fail to succeed in the path of virtuosity and righteousness , God does quell our own ego and arrogance in his own
Leelas( God's play) . The God within us will also make us smile when we sail through
any suffering, just like how Lord Krishna smiles even when the serpent
coils around him. Hence we have to develop the nature of love and humility towards god and everyone to put an end to all our suffering and find that peace and happiness within!
A great composition by Saint Oothukaadu Venkata Subbaiyer.
