5 Important Tips For Grooming Your First Kamfa
Kamfas! Everyone loves this beautiful type of flowerhorn as for most they are more attractive than the plain old RDs and SRDs. This being said, kamfas are also tougher to take care of and unlike SRDs, most kamfas are actually a tad bit tougher to groom. Fear not though! Listed below are 5 important tips that can be followed when you purchase your first kamfa.
1) Water Changes - Kamfas, both old and new generation varieties prefer small water changes done on a daily basis. Small water changes should be limited to 30% every day and the water that is added to the tank should be of the same temperature as the tank water.
2) Type of Water - It is believed that Kamfas especially the older generation variety prefer aged water. This means that, before doing a water change, storing a few buckets of water should be stored 2 to 3 days in advance. Aged water should preferably be used every time a water change is done. The process of aging removes the chlorine content in the stored water through evaporation so it is doubly beneficial to your kamfa.
3) Addition of Salt - Non iodised sea salt can be used as a natural and safe supplement to aid your kamfa’s growth and well-being. The dosage should be limited to ½ cup of salt for every 30 gallons water. The salt should be added a few minutes after cleaning the tank with every water change. Remember that when you do a water change, only the lost amount of salt should be re added. For instance if you have a tank with a capacity of 100 gallons water and you change 30% water, then salt for only 30 gallons water should be added, i.e a maximum of ½ cup.
4) Type of Décor - A background paper can help your kamfa feel less stressed in his new surroundings as a bare tank without any background paper is scary for most fish who can see outside movement from majority of the sides of the tank. Adding a background paper can help a relaxed kamfa get better colours, kok and pearls.
5) Ph Buffers - Kamfas prefer hard water which has a PH of 8 or slightly more. Using natural buffers like coral chips inside the filter as filter media can help immensely. Using lava rocks inside the filter can be beneficial in more than 1 way as lava rock has an excellent porous surface area that can be used to multiply and harbor the beneficial nitrifying bacteria in your aquariums. As far as possible, try to restrict the use of artificial buffers such as chemicals, as chemicals are unhealthy in the long run especially if you use the chemical in excess.
