aka, The Little Tender Who Could
Seaplane tenders and their rôle in naval aviation have been unfortunately forgotten in history as they find themselves overshadowed by the impressive fleet carriers and the battles that made the Pacific War what it was. The Kamikawa Maru (神川丸) and her floatplanes had an important niche to fill in a war that was fought over the huge expanses of the Pacific, Indian, and Arctic oceans as Pete, Dave, Rufe, and Rex reconnaissance and fighter floatplanes found themselves equally important in both large harbours and lonely, hidden holes in the wall from icy Attu in the Aleutians to covert jungle bases only miles from India or Australia. With today being the anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea, it is appropriate to tell the tale of Kamikawa Maru: the littlest "carrier" in the Coral Sea. Her scout aircraft played a tiny but important part flying out of Deboyne Island in the Luisiades as they provided the eyes in the sky for the invasion and carrier fleets in the days and hours before the Shōkaku, Zuikaku, and Shōhō would fight the first carrier battle in history against the Yorktown and Lexington.
