Interesting video, Jerry. In fact, so interesting I read all the comments too. Again, many good ideas. My own use of the Sharges has been limited; I have "found" the best height for the pad and superglued the bolts in position. I now have some 100% IPA, have not used it yet, but have found Sharges works very well running without liquid. No dirty wheels. Will put up a video on this when the weather becomes 'English' again................Cheers, Reinhard.

Hi Reinhard, you are correct it does do a good job dry, which i mentioned but edited out as the video was getting too long. But yes it does clean well. Sharge got in contact and stated they feel 100% IPA is not a good idea as it strips paint and affects plastic. They have also come up with a fix for the pad height and clips plus hooks so I may make an update version and video. Again thanks for your support and comments, Take care. Jerry

Track cleaning in Thailand is still for me to discover, how often and which way to do it. Even on the planed small model railway, I am in favour of The Sharge Track cleaner and after reading the other comments I would run my old Triang Hornby Track cleaner behind it too, to clean up any residue. I will be using System 6 steel track as that is what I have including some flexible track that may be Peco. I bought a box load of track off of eBay for 99P and £18.00 postage and it arrived in 5 boxes at my dad's house in the UK, so I asked my older brother to go through it all and throw away any that was beyond repair. I will not say how much it cost them to send me all of my Hornby trains and items bought off of eBay and the track as they sent it by Airmail. It was still packed in four boxes and a 4-inch dia cardboard tube containing the flexible track. Which I still have not opened. I would carry out some modification to The sharge Cleaner. The first thing would be to hide those bright shiny nuts. Thanks for both reviews. Martin (Thailand)

I wonder if those little cleaning pads that clip on to axles would improve it at all. They may help pick up some of the residue and gunk left behind so the pushing loco doesn't pick it up. I'm about to order one in N and can already tell I'm never going to use those clips to hold the pad in place. Hopefully a small elastic band will do the job! I wouldn't mind seeing a full cleaning rake go on sale in the future. Ideally you'd first have a wagon with a block (similar to the Peco rubber) rubbing the rails to break down any large chunks, then the Sharge and finally something with a pad to pick up the residue. All of that stuck between a pair of 20s or 37s would look the business!

I’m no expert but I have been doing a lot of research including model railway publications into why the track goes black. Apparently as the wheels rotate over the track small sparks are generated which dislodges minute partials of metal from the wheels and track which oxidises hence the black residue this is not allowing for the dust. The most popular answer is to use a cleaner that is non polar a few suggestion are WD 40 contact cleaner, Deoxit, Petrol, Turpentine, ordinary WD 40, CRC contact cleaner, paraffin. None recommended because they are polar so encourage sparking include. IPA, with water being the worst . Cheers Mike
@jerryallen34
5 жыл бұрын
Oxidising track is an issue for me as is thick dust and then oil etc so understand what you Mike. Are you saying I should not be mixing the IPA with water? Is that the cause of the black residue? I thought about Turps as my dad used that when I was small. Do you have any views on White Spirit? I see Vodka has been suggested, Lol! Many thanks for the comments, Jerry
@mikehawkins8785
5 жыл бұрын
@@jerryallen34 The black residue is near 100% pure nickel oxide What I am lead to believe is petroleum based are good for cleaning as they are none polar so do not encourage the sparks to generate, obviously you have to use sparingly so as not to get too much on the plastic elements. Produces like IPA clean well but leave the track and wheels polar so open to sparking and quickly return of the black residue. This, however, seems to be one of the better ones and certainly from your review I’d be tempted by it. Hi there!! Nice video. I am more of a steam era fan so my obvious question is; are there any steam loco models that you think are powerful enough to use with this cleaning wagon?""
@phil36310
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, I watched this update video with great interest. But the procedure got me thinking. Since you use this fluid IPA (?) - ( is that the famous Indian Pale Ale ?? ) wets the track and what is not picked up on the pad just spreads the residue - read dirt - under the wheels of the rolling stock. So putting an 'absorbing' kind of devise behind the 'wetter' to dry the track could be a help ?An old open wagon with some weight on, an absorbing piece of wood with two nails sitting in holes of the wagon floor + cloth attached that rubs & dries the rail tops. (See the many DIY cleaning wagons as example). Did you test the use of graphite from a simple thick pencil after the cleaning on the rail tops to improve electric contact and additional protection ? I do not have humidity problems here in the Centre of France - except the 'heat wave' with up to 40°Celsius last week - and I just run the woodland scenics 'Dust Monkeys' clipped on the axle of a few wagons and run a graphite stick every meter or so and at maybe 6 à 8 weeks interval. ...And a fine IPA to drink on occasion ! Well, I sincerely hope that you find the right answer to the problem and enjoy the running sessions to the full. Greetings & happy railroading ! Filip

Also, why does the pad holder need to be sprung loaded and have adjustment screws, why not just make it out of a heavy substance and let gravity do the adjustments. Top flow screw hole would be better with the same finger type screw as the side filler hole too.
