The Kanas River and Kanas Lake are stunning natural features located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, renowned for their breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity.
The Kanas River, which flows from Kanas Lake, is known for its pristine waters and scenic beauty. The river winds its way through the region, carving through valleys and forests, and eventually joining the Irtysh River.
Experience the pristine beauty of Kanas’ Siberian Taiga, where larch, spruce and fir trees dominate the landscape.
Kanas Lake, often referred to as the "Kanas Moonlight Lake," is a glacial lake situated at an elevation of about 1,374 meters (4,500 feet) above sea level. It is surrounded by majestic mountains, dense forests, and picturesque meadows, creating a captivating setting. The lake spans approximately 38 square kilometers (15 square miles) and reaches depths of up to 190 meters (623 feet).
One of the most striking characteristics of Kanas Lake is its stunning turquoise color, which changes hue with the seasons and times of day, influenced by the weather and the angle of sunlight. The lake is fed by glacial meltwater from the surrounding peaks and is part of the Kanas Nature Reserve, a protected area that supports a variety of wildlife, including rare species like the Siberian ibex and the snow leopard.
Kanas River and Kanas Lake have stolen my heart and I will carry the memories of their breathtaking landscapes and serene tranquillity with me forever.
