Mahakavi Kanhaiyalal Sethia was an internationally acclaimed poet, educationist, social reformer, environmentalist and freedom fighter.
To celebrate and promote poetry, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024, in association with Mahakavi Kanhaiyalal Sethia Foundation and a distinguished jury comprising of Namita Gokhale, Sanjoy Roy, Jaiprakash Sethia, Siddharth Sethia, continues its annual prize in memory of Mahakavi Kanhaiyalal Sethia.
His poem, Dharti Dhora Re is regarded as the unofficial anthem of Rajasthan.
The winner of this year’s award is Arundhathi Subramaniam.
Namita Gokhale is the author of twenty three works of fiction and non-fiction. She is co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival (with William Dalrymple) . Her debut novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, published in 1984 , remains a cult classic. A novella, Never Never Land is a 2024 publication. Her recent non-fiction includes Mystics and Sceptics- Searching Himalayan Masters and the anthology Treasures of Lakshmi. Gokhale’s work spans different genres, including novels, short stories, Himalayan studies, mythology, several anthologies, books for young readers, and a play. Gokhale is committed to platforming literary dialogue and showcasing the rich diversity of multilingual Indian identity . She is the recipient of various prizes and awards, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Literature) Award 2021 for her novel Things to Leave Behind.
Sanjoy K. Roy, an entrepreneur of the arts, is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 festivals in 42 cities and 17 countries, including the world’s largest literary gathering - the Jaipur Literature Festival and international editions of JLF. He is a founder-trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust, working to provide support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi where over 1,30,000 children have benefited from education, training and residential services. Roy is the Co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and former President of Event and Entertainment Management Association. He lectures at and works in collaboration with leading universities across the world and has been conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa by University of York, UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts and society.
Sukrita Paul Kumar, born in Kenya, has been a resident poet and Fellow at the prestigious International Writing Programme, Iowa, USA. A former Fellow at IIAS (Shimla) and honorary faculty at Durrell Centre, Corfu, Greece, she has several collections of poetry, translations, and critical works. Additionally, she has held exhibitions of her paintings. She held the Aruna Asaf Ali Chair at the University of Delhi. Currently, she serves as the Guest Editor for Indian Literature at Sahitya Akademi. In 2023, she was awarded the Tagore Literary Prize for her latest book of selected poems, Salt and Pepper.
Ranjit Hoskote’s collections of poetry include Vanishing Acts, Central Time,
Jonahwhale, Hunchprose and Icelight. His acclaimed translation of a 14th -century Kashmiri mystic’s work has appeared as I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded. A Fellow of the International Writing Program, University of Iowa, Hoskote has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Golden Jubilee Award and the JLF-Mahakavi Kanhaiya Lal Sethia Award.
Siddharth Sethia is the founder trustee of Mahakavi Kanhaiyalal Sethia Foundation. He instituted the Poetry Award to recognize the magnificence of timeless poetry and literature and honour poets across India. He has been conferred with the Honoris Causa from the State University of Delhi for his contribution towards poetry, social work and culture.
