Omg this is legitimately the kind of belief system I grew up with. It's very similar to New Age. Hearing someone call out it's lack of moral accountability without hesitation is a big relief. I was raised in a cult, got out, and while still mentally weakened I met someone online who believed pretty much this Ascension stuff: everything bad that happens to you is karma from your past life. I actually believed it for a while, but luckily I never got to "so anything bad YOU do is okay because they had it coming." I mean, there's preying on the vulnerable, and there's brainwashing people to be a horde of dickwads. In a way, that's what Nazis did: "morality is a Jewish invention so if you act like mass murder is bad, you've been brainwashed by Jews." It not only freed people from moral accountability, it made having a moral compass a BAD THING. And millions ate it up. Some of the most brilliant scientific minds in the world were Nazis, and the most hard-core bunch within the Nazi regime were the medical doctors. As Simon said, smart people fall into cults all the time.

Possible topic for a short Decoding the Unknown: the origin of the Lorreto Chapel Staircase in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. From the publication “Miracle or a Wonder of Construction?” By Carl R. Albach,Consulting Electircal Engineer, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dec 1965: “The chapel was beautiful and so was the choir loft, but there was no way to get from one to the other. Many carpenters were called in for advice but all came up with the same answer, it just couldn’t be done. Because of the height of the loft, a conventional stairway would take up too much room in the chapel below. It was a question of using a ladder or rebuilding the balcony.” The chapel was built in 1873.The nuns - the Sisters of Loretta - prayed a novena. Again, according to Mr. Albach, “As the legend goes, it was on the last day of the novena that a gray-haired man with a donkey and a tool chest stopped at the Academy [The chapel was part of a school for girls.] …the only tools the used by the old man were a saw, a T square, and a hammer. They [the sisters] also remember seeing tubs of water sitting around filled with pieces of soaking wood. When Mother Magdalene looked for the man to pay for the work, he could not be found. Even the local lumber yard had no record of any wood being purchased for the project.” The staircase is “circular, consisting of 33 steps and two complete turns of 360 degrees each, without a center support. It rests against the loft at the top and on the floor at the bottom, where the entire weight appears to be supported. Wooden pegs, rather than nails, were used throughout.” Mr. Albach continues, “Architects and builders from many points outside of the State have come through the years to inspect this masterpiece … and never fail to marvel how it manages to stay in place. There were some who felt it should have crashed in a heap the first time it was used, yet it still stands after many years of daily use.” The article continues with a hypothesis that the design is a “coiled spring effect.” Another source I read was “Loretta Chapel: The Miraculous Staircase (™)” Bill Brokaw, 2002, R.L. Ruehrwein, Publisher, Lawrenceburg, IN. In this publication, there is information that The Loretta Academy was in existence for 115 years. The staircase was used for over 100 years. Page 11 of this publication reviews constructions theories for the staircase: Double Helix, Inside Stringer, and Shear Theory. No consensus of how the staircase has stood and worked has yet been agreed upon. This same publication references information on the analysis of the wood used for construction. I have also read this publication called “Loretta Chapel Museum Staircase Wood Analysis: A Stairway from Heaven? Loretta Chapel Staircase Wood Analysis and Technical Description, Forrest N. Easley, Forester/Wood Technologits, Consulting Researcher, Dec. 28, 1996. Mr. Easley writes that he worked with a “small specimen of wood taken from the upper-inner stringer of the Loretta Chapel staircase approximately where it joins the choir balcony front girder timber. The specimen measured approximately three quarters of an inch square by one eight-inch in thickness.” (19 X 19 X 3.2 mm) Mr. Easley determined the wood was a type of evergreen of the genus Picea which are spruces. However, he could find no Picea that the wood belonged to leading Mr. Easley to conclude: “Therefore, I, the investigator, since it’s specimen is of a wood heretofore unknown, hereby assign to the thus-far unnamed species with the genus Pinacae Picea the following names: Suggested scientific name: Pinacae Picea josefii Easley. Suggested common name: Loretta Spruce.” Note: the suggestion of “josefii” comes from the sisters praying their novena to Saint Joseph for help in getting their staircase built. If this chapel and it’s staircase is not a story for Decoding the Unknown or one of your other KZitem channels/podcasts, I hope you still find this information interesting! Simon, keep up the great, informative, and entertaining work! Kathy K

I've noticed over a few recent videos across his channels, in ones where he is seated at this desk, that either he is filming through a continuous slight earthquake, is really amped up on something, or just cannot sit still, or has developed a palsy or parkinsons. Cuz he be shaking more than a bit and it makes his mic shake as well.

After all this stuff, I'd say do a piece on how Influencers gain heaps of followers and form some kind of cult following. You are a cult leader yourself and don't even know it. The internet is full of mysterious stuff, but it gets buried in all the other stuff and you need to research thoroughly to find the gems.

"Archive 81" has been canceled after one season. I saw it and liked it, but it's frustrating knowing a plotline won't be completely fleshed out and wrapped up. However, speaking of "Lost", sometimes it would be better if there are no endings. Seriously, I will never ever forgive them for the ending. Even if they WERE making it all up as they went along, throwing all the mysterious confusing stuff in on a whim -- without reason or purpose (as it turns out) -- they could have bothered to wrap it up with *some* kind of satisfying ending that explained things (Computer simulation? Illuminati game show?) instead of saying "none of it ever happened. It's just the weirdness the people thought/experienced when they died. The smoke monster means nothing, the numbers mean nothing. Now that they realize they're dead, it's over." Effers!!

Yeah, steam totally has refunds. I forget whether or not it's within the first seven or 30 days or something even, but you can basically get a no questions asked refund on any steam game. If you play it or keep it for a long time, then it's yours, If you just want your money back right after buying a game, then that's not a problem at all.

Oh my goodness. I did a personal growth class and the instructor told us about these soul contracts! We were taught that our souls needed to learn something, so it had asked another soul to be the"bad guy" or whatever. We were even gifted a children's book about it....The Little Soul and the Sun.. check it out!! They never called it Ascensionism, but it was this!! So crazy!!

"Personal growth class" much like a "Free personality test" or "Introductory training course" are often used as cover for a high pressure recruitment pitch and/or hard sell. You're signing up to be stuck in a room with someone for an hour or more and are effectively forced to listen to them for the duration. Offline, away from regulators and with no evidence of what transpires there. If it was legit they would just have told you the information in the online video you saw that invited you to the event. It would be cheaper for them to do that, and they would reach many more people. The thing to remember is, why are they doing this? If you aren't paying them for their time they must be getting something else out of it. Whether that's expanding their cult, or suckering you into a financial scam, or just selling you overpriced garbage it's not being done for your benefit.

Kevin, very good writing, and I have a question for you (it's honestly barely even tangentially relevant, but that's what KZitem comments are for): what is your opinion of the Buddha's teachings about karma and nirvana? I agree that this cult you mentioned does sound like it's blaming victims for their hardships, but how would you contrast this with what the Buddha taught on karmic effects of deeds committed in past lives, or the desirability (or lack thereof) of nirvana? Just curious.
@ThatWriterKevin

As I understand it, karma as it relates to rebirth basically determines your starting point: the form, realm, and station in life into which you are born. You may be a lower lifeform or start at a rough station in life, but evil is not done to you in your current life resulting from past lives; rather your past life adjusts the difficulty setting for your current life. That's just as I understand it and I haven't studied it a lot
