It was no cake walk when slaves escaped nor when they were freed. Of course Kanye ( and others) can say, “ shoulda woulda coulda, when events have already happened and when youre not in that situation yourself! All he want is attention. He said it himself if he cuts out music and focuses on fashion he will be irrelevant so what does he do, gets with the biggest socialite of the world and gets her to wear his “fashions.” And still...they refer to him as “niggaz” in paris. It always bothers me when people casually question our ancestors and reduce what they went through as a mere inconvenience that they could have overcome if they had the willpower. People always say “well it was so many of us and less of them”....and while that may have been true of a particular plantation., we were and still are the minority. So whereas some may have won the battle on a plantation, they would have ultimately lost the war. It’s beyond me that people think that slaves who were tortured and treated as if they were less than animals, didn’t think about breaking free. It just wasn’t feasible. Not that they wanted to remain in that situation, not that they didn’t think for themselves, no that they weren’t free thinkers. They simply did not have the resources needed until people bounded together to create change. But that change doesn’t happen overnight or even in a couple of years. We’re still undergoing that very change.
@passion4family

Speak. There were several revolts. The Underground Railroad. We could go on. The killed slaves and tortured and mutilated them to deter others from trying the same to make an example. They would threaten to hurt everyone else if one person tried to escape. Among other things. Smh. That whole narrative is insulting. And for those did become brainwashed or mentally enslaved in one way or another....if a kidnapped woman is brainwashed....does that mean her captivity is her "choice"?? It's all ridiculous.

I understood what Kanye was trying to articulate but what he said was wrong and in poor taste. Kanye doesn’t realize that fear is what caused 400 yrs of slavery. Fear is powerful. I’m sure most of us today feel like it couldn’t have been us but We don’t really know because we weren’t raised in that time. I’m happy Van got him together. Kanye also knows the media doesn’t cover black people doing good in the community. He is confusing free thinking with saying whatever pops in your head at the time.
@DWFIT
6 жыл бұрын
jill scottman You would have to ask Kanye that question...I really didn’t pay much attention to the amount of time He said. My focus was on that he said it was a choice. According to google there was 246 years of slavery. I would have to research further to confirm that number. My point was slavery lasted so long due to FEAR not choice.
@arinic7
6 жыл бұрын
DWFIT I guess Kanye was trying to say fear was their choice. The slaves chose fear instead of fighting back. For example on a plantation there were about 100 slaves and then there’s the master and an overseer. Those slaves could’ve easily fought off 1 master and 1 overseer , but because of fear they chose not to.
@minkagaston
6 жыл бұрын
It was more than fear. There was a systematic system of physical, mental and emotional abuse. It was strategic war and conquering tactics. The rabbit whole is deep.
@arinic7
6 жыл бұрын
Minka Gaston Yes , I agree . Because of the physical , mental , and emotional abuse and etc. The slaves were too afraid to stand up and fight for their lives (Fear). But fear didn’t stop the Haitian slaves . They fought until they were free .
@DWFIT
6 жыл бұрын
arinic7 Right I understood what he meant. I said that in my comment. But he didn’t express himself the right way. And he is wrong. He knows that some white ppl will run with what he says. To say slavery was a choice or it sounds like a choice was irresponsible as a black influential celebrity. He meant to say what Dineva stated that the mindset of following the herd is what caused slavery to last so long. I don’t think the enslaved choose fear. Fear is an emotion. Everyone reacts to fear differently. I’m sure there were slaves that fought back and were killed or tried to escape. Some did not. At the end of the day Kanye is wrong in my opinion. He knows how media works and is talking out of his ass instead of explaining his ideals properly. Making reckless statements is not free thinking. I consider myself a free thinker. I don’t jump on every bandwagon. I get the facts and come to my own conclusions. I enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts on the matter. Enjoy the rest of your day everyone.

I will keep him in my prayers..he is clearly going through something deep! 😔 I don’t even think he believes all the things that are spewing out of his mouth!!!

Let's not forget the fear that slave masters engrained in slaves. If you tried to escape, you were more than likely caught, maimed, or murdered. We also need to remember that there were laws that kept slaved enslaved during slavery and post slavery. So, please think FD before you say things like you understand what Kanye meant.

U can be very intelligent and graduate from a university but that DOES NOT mean u can get a career that u love and make loads of money. Kanye is part of that " pull urself up from the bootstraps" club. He says if i can do it, u can too-which is what rich white people always say.

Great thoughts and I agreed with most of the video. The only exception would be the statement you and others have voiced about them choosing to remain enslaved though Black people had numbers on their side. I believe our generation lacks true empathy and cannot fully put themselves in the shoes of our ancestors. If we could, we’d realize the shackles of the mind are no different than the shackles on our ankles and wrist. The mental conditioning that took place was forced on a group of people in a foreign land who could not speak the language and were killed for even trying to figure out where the hell they were in the world and what was going on around them. Also, you’re talking about generations of people with no education, no idea of how large the world is, have seen those that looked like them beat, raped, murdered, used on breeding farms, etc. Literally, where do you go after the revolt? You can’t work, you’re likely to die without even making it out of town first, your family could be hurt or killed in retaliation, had no power and no civil rights. The issue is young people today use current, first world thinking to place judgements on our ancestors and, unfortunately, the further removed we become from slavery the worse it will be. This is why I read and re-read about African American history because I never want to lose the level of empathy I have now for those who came before me. ✌🏾

That's precisely why he didn't marry a sister, because she would have protected and grinded for him like that. Brothers like Kanye don't want a true Queen because he lacks truth and light within his own soul. I pulled the plug on Kanye when he disrupted that white girl's speech during the Grammy. That was disrespectful in a way that is unacceptable.

Everyone likes “freethinking”. Who would object to free thought? But 10 times out of 9 the people who are the loudest about how “free” their thought is are the ones spewing the most nonsensical bullshit. What’s the value of free thought if what you’re thinking is ahistorical, morally bankrupt, factually incorrect, and all around ignorant of the reality of black life in America? You asked who’s hanging around Kanye, but I guess something that got lost in the sauce is that Kanye West was there at TMZ with noted “freethinking” right wing Uncle Tomasita Candace Owens. He’s also been spotted with Charlie Kirk, head of Turning Point USA, a right wing advocacy group. He’s surrounding himself with de facto white supremacists and far right wing conservatives and that’s who he’s getting these ideas from. It’s kinda like Donald Trump; Kanye adopts the politics of the last person he talked to. That’s what’s so dangerous about what Kanye is saying. He’s not just an icon for blacks, a huge portion of his fan base also consists of young white men. It’s different than a Lauryn Hill or whoever saying something dumb because Kanye’s got cross cultural appeal. And the alt right knows that you don’t have to debate to bring people over to your side. You just plant a seed of confusion or doubt that you can nurture when young people see Kanye with pseudo intellectuals like Owens or Kirk and start watching their KZitem videos. And the Very Online right wing provocateurs are absolutely loving this. They actively seek out outright right wing or otherwise confused blacks to further their ideological agenda. There’s a concept in political science called the “Overton window” that refers to the range of ideas that are acceptable to discuss in public. Since overt racism is now taboo in public, the far right wants to shift the Overton window back to the right so that it would again be acceptable to question the existence of racism or assert that blacks are violent or unintelligent by choice or nature. Although with the rise of the alt right white supremacist ideas have become more mainstream (partially due to irresponsible media coverage), who could be a better salesman for white supremacy than a rich, successful black man? You get to hoodwink blacks and other minorities into supporting right wing ideas and policies and also you can fight off accusations of racism. It can’t be racist because look the negro said it himself!

I loathe any type of explanation into any reasoning of Kanye’s use of “400 years of slavery was a choice”. He wasn’t going anywhere with it. It is historical facts that our ancestors fought back through revolts, attacked the crews on Slave ships, killed their children and and even took their own lives and their children to suffer the pain and suffering of enslavement. They fought in wars with the false promises of freedom. I hate any type of notion that he was right in any way about slavery being a choice in any form. That’s when I start checking out. Lol. Other than that, great episode.

Can we just acknowledge the fact that being a free-thinker doesn't mean just going against the majority just to be a contrarian. Free-thinking is having the courage, imagination, intellect and ability to systematically challenge and organize thoughts that examine ideas, behavior and any other thing on this earth (and beyond) that are unpopular, undiscovered or that don't currently exist. This definition of free-thinking isn't all inclusive either as there's so much more that I could say and want to say. This situation with Kanye doesn't fit the bill of him just practicing the idea free-thinking. Kanye is so lost and confused and I do actually believe he has mental health issues.

Let's hold Kanye-and him alone- responsible for himself and his behavior. I don't think he is crazy, nor do I buy the argument that he does not understand the consequences of his actions; he simply does not care. Also, it is highly insulting to our ancestors, who resisted and challenged slavery EVERY STEP OF THE WAY and in multiple ways, to suggest that they could have done more, should have fought harder against slavery or even that they chose to remain enslaved. I wonder if some people know how Haiti became a free and independent nation. It sure was not because their white masters suddenly developed a conscience. There is already a tendency in this country to sanitize slavery and American history, in general, and when we support or claim to "understand" Kanye's nonsensical statements, we are simply aiding that effort.
