@patrickrannou1278

@@lanishajackson2677 Say you have two teachers trying to teach you maths. One is a much wiser and intelligent than you and very dedicated teacher, actively trying to teach you using advanced techniques. The other teacher is much stupider than you and isn't even putting the effort to try to teach you anything, all you can do is watch him do his everyday life errands and try to learn maths from that. Now, which teacher will make teaching maths easy vs hard? The difference will in fact be felt by several orders of magnitude. Same thing, humans teaching English make it much easier than the other way around, humans trying too learn bonobo. And this remains true DESPITE the fact that bonobos are much less intelligent that us. Because our intelligence is SOME orders of magnitude higher than bonobos, but the teaching capability differences are LOTS MORE orders of magnitude of difference. What our bonobo-language learning advantage we get from our higher intelligence is MORE than ignored by fact that the bonobo teaching si an even bigger disadvantage. So when taking *both* effects together, it ends up being much easier to teach english to a bonobo, than to learn bonobo from bonobos. A more fair comparison would be: what is easier? humans trying to learn bonobo from bonobos, just by watching them (with no active teaching involved), or bonobos trying to learn english from humans, just by watching them (also with no active teaching involved)? Give us a bonobo actively trying to teach us, and yeah it will be easier for us to learn bonobo, than for bonobos to learn english from scientist teachers. Otherwise, we should not try to compare apples and oranges.

Some of those criticisms are very legitimate, don't get me wrong, but in the case of Kanzi and his lexigrams, there is no gray room. He knows the words and symbols, and that isn't deniable. There's still a possibility for reading into his communications too much, but there is ZERO doubt that he has a meaning for all of the words the researchers claim he does.

We should not forget the technology that would read the brains electrical signs which would allow understanding what an ape is really thinking, its hard for them to express and explain so maybe such a tech will show that apes do really think and try to speak like us but something is preventing them.
