Well done. We also have a blind, 16 year old, cairn terrier, who has been blind for the last 3 1/2 years. We use verbal commands, the ankle bell, etc. We tried the 'halo' which ended up hindering her daily life more than it helped. Our walks are slow and she does do the 'zig-zag', but we still do our walks in the city and desert. Blindness is not a death sentence - it is just an adjustment of how life needs to be lived. Her blindness taught me to slow down and enjoy life.

My dog had glaucoma. Her eyes became so painful from the glaucoma pressure that here eyes had to be surgically removed by an eye specialist vet. I rescued her when she was losing her sight and could only see light and shadows. We have been through a journey together of adapting to all these challenges. I have become her “seeing eye person” just as you learned to do for your beautiful husky. Your commitment to your dog is inspiring to watch on this video. What a lucky dog. So sorry for your loss. Such a deep bond is formed when your dog relies on you to navigate the world and to feel safe. My Molly, who is a mini-poodle, has been such a gift.💗

My furbaby gradually went blind due to diabetes. It is something new for her to understand why she can't see anymore and something new for me to learn how to be her guide. We're both learning how to use her sense of smell and hearing, simple commands and such.... as for me, I try not to break down and cry so that I can think straight of how to make her life comfy as possible and happy. She's like a daughter that I never had.

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing and say how very sorry we were to hear about your loss. Here in Scotland we’re in a similar situation where our 4 year old husky Moomie has been struck down with glaucoma and lost his blue eye where now his right eye is also at risk with laser surgeons advising the future looks very bleak for saving his long term vision. It’s a completely heartbreaking situation but we’re trying our best with daily blood pressure medication and in-house IOP monitoring. Thank you again for sharing. ❤️

Remember their vision isn't as important to them as it is to us. With the pressure spikes of glaucoma, they have intense pain. Once the pain is gone, which sometimes means removing the eye, the dogs bounce back pretty quickly. We lost one eye at a time. In hindsight I wish I would have used that extra time when he only had one eye, to work on the Directional commands...Left, Right, step down, path etc. . He was so smart that he learned them quickly after going blind. That would be my advice to you though. Work on training him now...as if he was already blind. Then if it happens, it won;t be a big deal to transition. At least not for your dog. They really rely on their noses the most. Good luck and prayers to you!

Hi Natalie. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom! That’s an absolutely brilliant idea and we’re going to take your advice next week when he head north to the Cairngorms with Moomie for Christmas. We purchased the TonoVet Plus for monitoring his eye pressure twice daily but it’s important for us to think ahead and the advice you’ve given us is very much appreciated where the legacy of Kaos lives on in helping others! ❤️. I’ll post a video of Moomie next week as he starts to learn how to manage better thanks to yourself and Kaos. Be sure to have a happy Christmas :-) John, Fiona & Moomie

Our Spunky is 10 years old and has been slowly going blind for the past few months - but it suddenly got lots worse this week. I'm thankful for people like you who have generously shared your lives and tricks to help the dog learn to navigate more easily through life without sight. Sadly, Spunky also has severe arthritis and both her right front & right back legs are weak and painful. She used to love her walks, but it's gotten so much harder with the arthritis. Blindness, we can deal with. But the arthritis is far more limiting...

So sorry for your loss. I just got Kane my 6 week old Siberian husky puppy I'm not sure what caused him to go blind. But he was having seizures and then couldn't see. I took him to the vet today and he confirmed he is blind. I am currently teaching him my voice and he does respond a little try to find me. I'm go to make him a halo harness just like the one you tried on your dog and then try to walk him. I've never done this before but I did have a blind Siberian husky/wolf as a kid and i know a little bout what to get and do and what not to get or do. He has to go to the vet again in 2 weeks get more shots and retested again to see if he has made any progress in his vision. I don't think he will. I think by what I was told by the previous owner of the litter that he may have been born blind. I let him sleep in my bed which the 2nd night he fell off twice so I then put a soft pet carrier on my bed next to me so he won't fall off. I have to monitor him 24/7 for any seizures to see if he needs medication for it. I have had him since last Thursday and so far he is making good progress by following my voice. Now I just have to get him to stop biting and starting walking on a leash. I talk to him as much as I can so he will get used to my voice. At first all he did was howl and cry but he doesn't do that now. He plays with my lil dachshunds which he didn't before he is really starting to open up now. Hopefully everything will workout and I will be able to train him to walk and stop biting.

My Duncan is blind and has adapted very well. Duncan follows me off leash well I give him verbal cues and if he gets off course I use a clicker to help him .Duncan does stairs well (he has had a few mis steps lol) but he knows "up" and "down" . He also knows stay, sit and right and left. Duncan asks to go potty he knows where the out door is and where his "potty spot" is . We live in an apartment and he knows which door is his ( I have a chime near the door). His food is placed on the edge of the plate vs the center because I discovered he does not go further than the edge when trying to eat . I keep his dishes on a mat and in the same place, same order . I have to reorient him if I change furniture positions and he gets a bit anxious until he learns the path. Duncan does not like to be touched by strangers suddenly and will growl as soon as he senses someone close. I introduce him to people by putting him in their arms and telling them to hold him close ( he is a little guy and loves snuggling). He is wonderful with people who hold him close because he feels secure/safe I suppose. Kaos is so beautiful and such an inspiration. I am sure he is having many new adventures across the bridge and will be waiting to be reunited with you :).
