Whole footage is not from the same over and some important part is missing... Actually cricket historians tell that Pakistani batsmen were not expecting an Indian bowler with good pace. When Kapil after a long run-up and effective jump delivered his first delivery , it was probably the fastest delivery from an Indian bowler since independence. In beginning batsmen were not wearing helmet but after one bouncer ,from which he saved himself ,he wore helmet and after that next bouncer struck his helmet. Kapil Dev got good pace in beginning of his career but after a toe injury he changed his jump which curtailed his pace, even after he got good pace but due to the burden of long spells, will for a long and injury free career , main focus on control and swing he didn't Bowl as fast as he had got potential to bowl. He used bowl only at 75-80% of his pace potential. His teammate Balvinder Sandhu tells that he was very fast on nets but used to curtail his speed during the actual matches.

I just commented because I thought that your comment is disrespecting to Kapil Dev. But if you used lollypop in a right way then it's okay. We have indeed seen very good medium pacers like Chamunda Vaas who have done great things without pace.

Not many people know that Kapil was the 1st man to take 200 and 250 wickets in ODIs. Kapil is the only captain to take 9 wickets in an innings. World record 184 innings without getting run out. Fastest 50 by an Indian in tests in 30 balls. Fastest century by an Indian in Tests in 74 balls. (Equalled by Azhar). Second fastest 50 by an Indian in ODI in 22 balls (Fastest by Agarkar in 21 balls) Only man to claim 400 wickets and score 5000 runs, also only man to claim 400 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests. Still youngest to 100 wickets and 1000 runs, 200 wickets and 2000 runs, 300 wickets and 3000 runs. He is still the youngest man to take 300 Test wickets. (Was also youngest to take 100, 200 and 400 but these 3 records stand broken now). Strike rate of 94 and 95 in tests and ODIs, higher than Richards and Sehwag. He is the 1st man to hit 4 consecutive 6s in tests. (Now equalled by Afridi and De Villiers but not broken). (Myth: Kapil neved bowled a no ball: This is wrong, he did bowl no balls.)

A wonderful memory. I remember watching this live on TV while in grade 9. It was fun to watch all those greats of yesteryears. Players were simple, commentators with genuine style and there were no bowlers running like aeroplanes or like a wild animal, jumping in the air and on each other’s laps after dismissing a batsman, no batters pumping fist in the air, jumping crazily after making a 100. There used to be just raising bats with smiles and a little chuckle, patting on shoulders, shaking hands between the batters after a milestone is reached, players gathering around the bowlers to pat on the back or embrace him happily after a dismissal or to hug the fielder after taking a catch. All genuine and noble celebrations. Today they all behave like rascals rather then a player of a gentlemen sports.

Both Pakistan and India were cursed with unathletic and lazy slip fielders and catching in general. Kapil and Wasim should both have had more than 550 wickets for their talent and longevity. While it is good to see the first test match and bowling of Kapil Dev, I counted 13 deliveries without a No-Ball...LOL But Aamir, Thank you for this rare video footage.

Friends..that was a golden era of the gentleman's game when there were alrounders like Imran khan, Sir Rechard hadlee, Kapil dev and Ian Botham. They were legends..their void in the team of the respective country is yet to be fulfilled.

Love the classical traditional commentary. It's detailed and classical expression and intelligent, free from the commercialisation and biased dumbed down commentary we see today. All today's commentators care about is fireworks and T20 and promoting Ads from TV network sponsors.

Sridhar Kaushik Who says today's matches are more entertaining? And sport should be about sport and tradition not entertainment. Go back to 8 ball overs and all players wear creams and timeless tests, the casual bubble gum fans can get stuffed.

entertiament is not important, being boring and upholding traditions is even if it means less fans, cricket only wants real fans traditional fans not silly young fans.

Exactly what I was about to comment...it was more like imran Khan.. a fuller arm action...he could have bowled much quicker had he stuck to this one...

Kapel Dev tickled me when he was avoiding the follow on and hit a few consecutive sixes against Eddie Hemmings in order to reach his 50 or 100?

This particular match is faisalabad. Ended in a draw. 2nd was Lahore and third was Karachi. 2nd and 3rd were exciting finishes both won by Pakistan chasing challenging targets after tea on 5th day. It was like 20-20 chases. Especially 3rd test in Karachi. Chased 163 in 30 mins plus 20 mandatory (rule in those days)last hour overs. So fielding side could keep over rate as slow as possible if that is in their interest but have to bowl 20 overs after that. Miandad and Asif Iqbal running was out of this world. Then Imran hit couple of sixes to Bedi to finished it off. Third test last day, Indian second innings collapse was triggered by direct hit runout of surrender Amarnath by Iqbal Qasim from fine leg boundary line. Gavaskar scored century in each innings in the third test. In the second test second innings India opening partnership was 197 and it seemed that it will never be broken. Then Mushtaq brought on Miandad to bowl and he got Chauhan in his first over. I was in 7th class and remember this series so well that I can give quiz on it 42 years on! There are other videos on youtube.

Yes.... kind words in comments from pakistani brothers.... I always felt that Imaran khan, Richard HeadlyI and Ian Botham during same time frame were much better all-rounders. Kapil excelled because back then there was scarecity of pace bowlers in India. I grew up watching them play....kapil won first world cup fof India... india still dont have good allrounders. As a person Kapil was probably best among that lot of all-rounders.

He is bowling too full and wide. May be a young rookie. Or only such balls have been chosen for this clip. In those days our family was too poor to buy cricket balls. We used to bring torn cricket balls from chepauk cricket ground. Hand stitch the leather after packing some jute threads inside. Paint red using waste paint from construction sites or red oxide. The red colour will give away within 10 overs and we will have a bare leather. Our improvised balls used to be spreroid shape but hard leather ones instead of tennis ball cricket that’s played now a days. We used to consider unmanly playing rubber ball cricket and was reserved only for kids below 3rd standard. But we have huge grounds in suburban chennai, all fallow agricultural lands. Large cement bins were used as light rollers for leveling the pitch. The pitch was so uneven that the ball will turn both off spin and leg spin if bowled short or raise sharply from good length. We had no helmets or glouses and we were not hurt by sheer luck. Even then I had a painful injury when a ball struck my right thumb when blocking a “fast bowler” and the entire nail peeled off in 15 days for new pristine smooth thumb nail. A burial ground used to be our boundary and the most gullible will be in deep mid wicket after 6 pm after sunset with burning corpse for company. And Kapil dev was our hero and Gavaskar was our villain (sorry sunny, sincere apologies). Imran khan was our exotic dashing cricketer and we seriously believed he bowled with a condom “on” and that’s why his balls were swinging and raising from good length. LoL.
