I recently took my driver's examination at that location, and I had a positive experience. My driving instructor was a former police officer, who is all business, but I found him to be cool. There are 3-4 road test routes on youtube. Two of the video have the street names and turns that you may be performing. However, your examiner may choose any street on the video and put them in assorted combinations. Here are a few tips that may help you with your driver's test. * Treat all yellow lights as red lights. Slow and stop * All stops must be completed before the white line, and you must halt for at least 3 secs. * You are deducted 5pts if you make a wide left turn or are not close to the curb on a right turn. * Unless there is visible danger from incoming vehicles, do not stop at a yield sign. They want you to gauge the time and speed of incoming traffic-- slow and proceed. * On turns, make sure you turn your head to the side and back TWICE before changing lanes or making a right or left turn. * Parallel parking- ensure you don't hit the curb while backing up. Fix and correct your position as needed. Make sure you are ample distance from the curb. Place the gears on park; parking BRAKES are on, turn off the vehicle ( unless specified not to) * Watch the bike lanes. Do not cross the solid white lines. * When changing lanes, do not change lanes on the pedestrian crossing, which is located in the middle of the road in two areas. When they tell you to change lanes, do it before or after the crosswalk. ( 5 pts deducted if you do that.) ** When you leave or return to the parking area, make sure you use your turn signal in the parking lot and when you turn into where they want you to park. ** Backing up, they want your hands behind the back seat of the passenger's chair while you are looking back. ** Don't follow too close to the vehicle in front of you. ** Click on your turn signal 100 ft before each turn. ** When you finally park at the end of the exam. Your parking brakes MUST be engaged! ** Before proceeding, make sure the pedestrian has completed crossing the road before proceeding. My friend failed because she failed to do this. **You can lose up to 22 points. Anything over that amount, and you fail. There are 5pts for major infractions and 2pt for minors. I hope this helps, and I wish everyone who takes this exam the best of luck

Do u still need to put ur hand on the back of the passenger chair if u have a rear view camera?
@360gaijin4

@@zachjames2281 You cannot look at the video console when backing up. Everything is old school and your technique needs to abide by the Hawaiian Driver's manual. But to answer your question, Yes, your hand needs to be placed behind the passenger's headrest whole, backing up. They will deduct points if you don't.

Now I’m more terrified than ever.😳 I’m 48 years old, been driving problem free on the mainland for 34 years, accidentally let my DL expire during covid. There’s zero chance I’ll remember all these details, even though I’m a good, safe driver. I was also told you don’t have to parallel park, but I see you do. Ugh.

Took my 1st road test here and although I failed (which was my fault the instructors here are fair and nice). I want to give out some tips for people in what to expect. 1. Practice a lot of parking, the parking lots here are very small and cramped than what I was used to parking with. 2. Practice your right turns with the bike lanes (this is what made me fail). I was too careful with trying to avoid the bike lane on my right turns to the point where I made it too wide and ended up in the other lane. And on the other hand be careful not to turn too tightly where you are driving into them. 3. Watch out for pedestrians. When I went there were a lot of people out crossing the streets, be sure to be careful with your speed and keep an eye out so you can make a complete stop when they are crossing. Make sure to wait they are finished crossing before you proceed. 4. Make sure you have smooth accelerations and braking especially on your left or right turns. Slow before you make the turns then slowly accelerate the entire time you turn. If you dont and try to accelerate twice then your car will probably jolt like mine did. 5. When you're in the car with the instructors before you drive off my instructor told me what she specifically was testing for (complete stops, speed limit, etc) which helped and she asked if I had any questions. Feel free to ask your instructor on specific things as some instructors may have different expectations. 6. Come in with a calm mind. This is probably the hardest part, but driving nervous will only have you ending up making a lot of mistakes you normally wouldn't do. Be confident as well in your actions. Other than that I do recommend this location, I saw a lot of people passing their test with different instructors before it was my turn to test and as long as you are a safe driver you should pass here.

Super similar route I took and I passed. The lady I had was super nice and even helped me out a bit. However there is an intersection somewhere during the test where you can either take a right in a normal turn lane or use the yield. use the yield, the other way will fail you. 3:35 is the exact intersection I'm talking about. If they ask you to take a right there, use the yield, even though the lane marking says you can go right. It's considered an inproper turn. My examaner said this intersection was the #1 thing people get failed for out in Kapolei.

I recently took the road test here and passed. My examiner was an older white-haired man who was chatty, kind, and extremely helpful. He seemed like the right type of person to be a road test examiner: he made me feel comfortable, he offered tips and guidance, and he seemed to be a good judge of driving skills instead of relying only on the point system. He also allowed me to park anywhere I wanted at the end of the test rather than try to squeeze into the reserved spots. The test route I took was different than this video, so my assumption is that an examiner may take you on any combination of roads in the area. Would definitely recommend the Kapolei road test. There are wide streets and good weather. Just watch out for your bike lanes and make sure to do head checks. The only complaint I have about this location is the busy parking lot and very tight parking spaces. Be prepared to back in or park on the street, as this DMV is always very busy. Good luck!

At the end of August 2024, we checked the status of the road test in Kapolei. The course was almost the same route as the two videos we have previously released. Drivers were always instructed to park in the middle of the road, and it appears that they were instructed to parallel park for all tests. (And in tight spaces!) We plan to release two new routes soon. Until it is released, please practice on the existing video course. Goodluck! Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

For anyone that struggles to pass a road test I would recommend going here. I had a very friendly woman (I did not get her name) it was very easy. Some tips I will mention: 1. Use a car that you are most comfortable driving in 2. Take your time when driving and parking 3. Always turn your head and use mirrors when making a lane change 4. Come to a complete stop behind the white line at stop signs 5. Always use blinkers 6. Use backup cameras (I used mine) 7. Turn your head when making a right if you are next to a bike lane 8. Ask questions if you are unsure on where to go during the test I would also like to mention that I did take a different route than shown in the video. I hope these tips help and I will add more if I can think of anymore!

It stops completely before the stop line. Then check for pedestrians, and if there are none, move forward by the sidewalk. Finally, check for cars on the roadway and if there is no traffic, enter the roadway. The only time you come to a complete stop is at the stop line.
