Sounds like a hotel pianist from the 1930s (the pianist is good, but the composition is mediocre). Anyone who likes this kind of thing should listen to Art Tatum, he is far superior in every way.

Hi Konstantin - This is a great piece, and you've obviously put much work into it. If you listen to Kapustin's own recording of it, though, he played it much "straighter", with steady tempo and dynamics, and used a light touch even in the most technical passages. It sounds to me like the piece was inspired by the Harlem stride pianists of the 1930s, who developed their full "two-handed" style to fill in for dance bands-so it was important for them to maintain a steady swing, rather than playing too rhapsodically or dramatically. Listen to Kapustin's version and I think you'll have a much better idea of what he had in mind. Playing this piece less "classically" also emphasizes how different it is from the other pieces in the series. Cheers!

Why should an artist play it the same way as the composer? It’s called interpretation for a reason. Kapustin couldn’t play his own works as well as most top tier artists and that’s ok. I personally love the Yeol Eum Son interpretations of the etudes . She really feels it and communicates that to the listener.
