Karate Shotokan - Школа/JKS
Koten Kata

Competitions in the Koten Kata section
First stage of the Minsk City Karate League
At the stage of preliminary fights, that is, before the actual meeting for medals, Kata are performed from a previously known list, for example Junro - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Judge number 1 takes out a card with the name of the complex, shows it to the athletes and loudly announces the name. Next, the participants simultaneously demonstrate the announced Kata.
At the end of the demonstration, the judges (5 or 7) use flags to determine the winner of the match. There can be no one.
When comparing the performance of two athletes, judges are guided by a list of rules. In the presented video, the Junro-1 Kata is performed at the first stage. This particular demo highlights two decision criteria well:
1. Focus
2. Creation or implementation of force in the direction of movement.
In the final part of the competition, athletes demonstrate “home preparation”, that is, the Kata that they chose and prepared in advance. Entering the tatami and performing Kata is carried out one at a time. After the second athlete completes the work, the judges determine the winner. A draw is also not allowed.
To summarize the above, we note the following - to compete for medals in this section you need to know at least 6 kata. How simple it is - decide for yourself, but this is how the foundations of the school of karate (Ryu-Ha) are laid.
Our Senkyo Club is at the very beginning of the journey of studying the Shotokan style, but we believe that the moment will come when our student will be able to take part in the JKS World Cup in the Kata section. To do this, we only have a little bit left to do, namely to be ready for card competitions, where the judge has 18 Kata on the list.
Our first steps on this path are in the video below...
