My Taekwondo Grandmaster emphasized to us that there are 3 types of sparing practice: testing: where you’re showing control and good technique, sparring: athletes with specific rules, and self defense where you are trying to end the fight with one attack. Context is importance but unfortunately overlooked by goobers on the internet who just want to sound cool.

In Aikido you practice kata (which unlike to Karate are two person drills) and randori - which is a more free-form application of kata movements/techniques. To do "sparring" would be complicated if you didn't have a "goal" to achieve and have all the tools available to get there. There are styles who try to do this, but the point is that the result is very dependent on the ruleset: What is the goal, what is allowed, etc. This could also imply that you would need to improve the use of your atemi andkeri waza - or more kumiuchi - (which isn't a bad thing per se), especially in an offensive way, so there would be initiative in the sparring. But this does conflict with the Aikido philosophy/mindset and the fact that Aikido basic techniques need a lot of practice time. Also, the result would become more like Karate then and we all know how different Karate can look depending on style, competition rules, etc. This is a very complicated and controversial topic.

I agree with this, I find aikido very fascinating. Its been criticized way too much. also I'm pretty sure that it was considering redirecting blades on the battlefields in japan right? I think that gets overlooked

aikijutsu and jujutsu had similar purposes and split somewhere down the line but yea I've heard it was a samurai art for neutralizing the opponent which is why it favors the "kuzushi" or unbalancing the opponent

no, they didn't really use swords on the battlefield in japan. blade defense was usually versus brigands or pirates, sometimes in duels

I moved to another city, didn't want to keep the Karate Culture channel going without him so I started a different one. Hope that helps!
