To all of the people on here complaining about these dunks: The players in this competition did not grow up watching dunk contests, they did not ever practice dunks, this is the first NBA dunk contest ever and the 2nd pro dunk contest ever, two of They were freestyling without any footage of past dunks, an advantage the "players" have today. No props or gimmicks either. Kareem's dunks are very difficult (coming from the right side and reverse dunking it on the left and touching the ball against the backboard and then slamming it) he makes it look easy because he's 7 foot 2. Kareem had the guts to enter a dunk contest. Shaq? Hakeem? LeBron? Did they ever enter a dunk contest?

Zach is great but he benefits from having the privilege of hindsight now that dunking has grown to its own art. The early trailblazers of dunking had it much harder, and some were arguably better physical specimens than Lavine. Lavine can’t fully palm a ball, thus limiting what he can do mid air. Why else do you think he’s a comparatively lackluster in game dunker? If peak athleticism Jordan was transported to today, he could perform every dunk Lavine has pulled off, but Lavine still can’t rock the cradle or one handed clutch the ball behind his head like Mike

0:20 Tapping the ball off the glass was nice. Cool video. I had to look this one up for more information. I alway heard about the 1976 “ABA” Dunk Contest and then the 1984 NBA one during All-Star weekend. I had never heard of this long form version during the 1976/77 season, though. Below is from Wikipedia: “The NBA held its first Slam Dunk Contest as a one-off, season-long event similar to NBA Horse event held the following season. There were 22 competitors throughout the event (one for each team at the time), including future Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Thompson, Alex English, Moses Malone, George Gervin, and Elvin Hayes and took place in multiple venues throughout the season. Darnell Hillman was named the winner that season, beating out the Golden State Warriors' Larry McNeill in the championship round on June 5, 1977 in Portland.” Thanks for the upload. 👍🏻

The haters in here are ignorant of the history of ball before the mid 80's. These early dunkers had to make shit up on the spot with no prior reference to what a contest dunk should look like. A lot was basic, sure, but they were the trailblazers. Oh well, nowadays everyone just does some variation of the East Bay Funk. And that was derivative as well, because Rider wasn't the first in the NBA to do a dunk like that. Orlando Woolridge did it ten years before Rider in the 1984 contest.
