I heard this song on British radio earlier this week. A nice song indeed. Then I heard how she did a solo album in 1980 and it wasn't released until the 90s...after she was dead. A shame.

I’m so glad she made this album. It shows three things. First, and most importantly, it indicates that the treatment she received for her eating disorder was working (unfortunately, it was too late). Then, it also showed that she delighted in singing, something a lot of people didn’t believe. And it showed what tremendous talent she had, with no one overseeing her work. I loved her Such a tragedy that she lost her battle with anorexia. Thank you, Karen, for leaving us so many wonderful songs to listen to…..it’s hard to find one I don’t love

No hesitation, brilliant post disco jazzy sound. Karen explored this genre with her open minded talent. It should have met great success because her audience was boundless and she was able to touch the heart of so many people. This album was everything but opportunism, it was a expression of genuine talent
@rigormortis414

For those old enough to remember, as wonderful as Karen's solo album was, the timing to release it could not have been worse. After the 'disco demolition night' at Comiskey Park, disco quite literally became a dirty word and took a nosedive practically overnight. Hipper-than-thou radio stations were suddenly falling all over themselves in a rush to abandon the format. Even the Bee Gees, who enjoyed a hot streak as the darlings of AM radio from 1976-1979, couldn't give away their albums in 1980. As with most things in life, timing is everything.
@Benjord
3 жыл бұрын
Remy, you are right on the money here. By 1980 disco was brutally mocked and dispised by every radio station you turned on. Karen's timing could not have been worse. This album had no chance of success had she released it in 1980. But to make matters worse, producer Phil Ramone made a horrendous decision to abandone Karen's natural Contralto vocal range and instead have her sing in a higher register. Everybody knew Karen's sweet spot was her natural beautiful lower range. What the heck was he thinking??? Richard (and other respected producers of the day) were absolutely correct to be super critical of this album for that reason alone. Poor Karen. She wanted to break out and do something on her own, and what happens? She is told by everyone she respected that her best course of action would be to shelve the project. They were right, of course, but you still have to feel badly for her.

Yes her voice was amazing but I have to disagree. Richard created the sound of the carpenters. He arranged the instruments rote the songs and selected the key she would sing in. Also he came in on harmonies over dubbed their sound. He is a brilliant writer producer and arranger in his own right. I think many of us forget this as Karen fronted the carpenters he was regarded as the paino player. Thats really not fair. I think Karen was the only one to recognize his mastery in creating their sound. He was responsible for their biggest hits because he has a kincredible gift for melody like Brian Wilson of the beach boys. He is gifted. Not to take away from the magic of Karen's beautiful vocal but Richard is the man who orchestrated how she sounds. They both were a team. Respected and loved each other. I miss them. I adored the carpenters. 😇💝💔

How tragic that Karen recorded this with Rod Temperton a phenomenal producer and writer for many fabulous Soulful acts while Richard was in treatment for Quaalude addiction and when he got out he made her shelf the project. What a tragic blow that must have been to Karen's already fragile ego since the album is quite beautiful and would have been quite relevant to when it should have been released. of Course Richard releases it after her death so she never got to enjoy the glory of having her own project and her own identity which with her Talent she certainly deserved

Maybe "love lines" wouldn't have gotten a lot of play in the disco dance clubs maybe it would have, but it certainly would have gotten a lot of radio play on the still many disco formatted radio stations that were still successful when the album should have been released. I think of Nicolette Larson "Lotta Love" although not considered a disco song by many it was slightly extended for a disco DJ only 12 in Promo disk and did get a vast amount of play in that format on the Disco radio stations. it was also a very successful pop and adult contemporary charting song. The shelving of Karen's album never gave it a "relevant at the time" chance to see what it would have done. My guess because of the beauty of her voice and the superb Rod temperton production it would have done fairly well. Off-the-wall lp by Michael Jackson had Rod' s input both in production and writing and it's profound success is historic.

Written by Rod Temperton who also wrote _Thriller._ Rod was from England and kept a very low profile passing away about eight years ago. The album this song is from had zero input from A&M and her brother, who did not like it. That is why it was suppressed, being released 16 years after her death. I must admit it does not bring out the best in Karen's voice, however shows how versatile she was.

Lovelines is a beautiful song sort of a jazzy infused semi disco record not the hardcore thumping beat of the disco music that most people associate with the genre. Rod temperton the person who wrote the song also wrote for Michael Jackson and Heatwave to name just a few and also wrote George Benson's give me the Night lyrics, which even after the Disco backlash quickly rose to number 3 on the billboard disco dance 100 charts. Karen's beautiful voice would have lent itself to any style of music and a mellow Jazzy disco record certainly gave her another platform to demonstrate her unending Talent. I personally bel ieve that Richard and Karen's mother were at least partially responsible for forcing her self-esteem into a corner which ultimately contributed to her anorexia bulimia. Loveline still could have been relevant as part of the whole album in general when it should have been released upon its completion. There were many artists non disco in nature that released one or two semi disco flavored or influenced song during and after the Disco era. Carly Simon "Spy" Maureen McGovern's "Different Worlds" (theme song from Angie) Robbie Dupree "nobody else" just to name a few

Ironically A&M records the label that Karen and Richard recorded for owner Herb Alpert was on the same side as Richard about shelving the project because of the Disco influence in a few of the songs. yet A&M records released in 1979 the Ethel Merman disco album although I personally find it kind of kitschy and fun it is one of the records that contributed to the reason why so many people developed a disdain for Disco. The irony in my opinion is that Karen's record would have done well and Ethel Merman only sort of had a small cult following but was never a great success.

I think "Lovelines" should have been saved and released as a single with "Made in America". It has both a Disco and Adult Contemporary flavor. Same for "If I Had You". Karen sagely realized that she needed to take a more mature, womanly approach -- but in a tasteful, sensuous way. Her work would have likely charted without "eclipsing" Carpenter's fare. I don't think the rest of the solo album should have been released...

The loud drums are a major drawback to this mix IMHO -- turn em down, move them drums 300 feet away. ARe you a dummer (like Karen)?

what i heard is the instruments on top with the voice in a up beat mode..karen's voice had long notes.. sounded like the arrangement were the artists of the album and not the singer..i think the arrangement demanded to sing more Motown style to place the voice on top ..

Why did the producer allow the music to drown her out, or is it something about how it was put onto KZitem?

ITA. But I don't think it is KZitem making the mix too loud in background & too low on Karen's voice. My guess is that Karen liked the drums loud & that she was the drummer; but it would sound a lot better with the accompaniment turned way down (for my taste)

I wish they would remix this and turn her gorgeous vocals up. The instrumentation is okay but this is halfway to an instrumental. Karen was neither a composer nor an arranger so A&M threw together what it could find in terms of song material and session musicians. The missing element of course is Richard. A&M spent $400,000 making this record and Karen herself makes it a keeper despite that everything else on this album comes up short. Additionally, there is no such thing as "going solo". Unless you are performing a cappella, going solo means you are firing your band and hiring a new one.

You hit the nail on the head: Karen's voice is too low in volume -- but I think of turning DOWN the background, especially those thumpy drums.

It would be nice if her voice was a little louder than the track
