Thanks for discussing the business end of being an artist. So many artists lose money when they’re new to the biz or get taken advantage of. Not to say that there aren’t many great gallerists. I’ve got a couple of unfortunate stories of my own, but Jeff - oh getting half of what the portrait commission was worth? That’s pretty bad.

Re the bad handshake. Why not get half the money up front. Maybe you do that now?

Listening to this and laughing to myself because I hold my breath too while painting. Maybe I oughta try figure 8’s with breathing? Good podcast with Karen. She’s articulate and good at telling her story. Karen’s paintings are breathtaking! Her frustration with lack of good academic education early on reflects much of my disappointment with the university art curriculum in the 70s/80s. Fortunately, I was able to take some good workshops and find mentors in the late 90s and 2000s. Painted with Schmid’s group in Vermont for 20 years but continued to learn from others and still am! So much easier to get a good education now.

I came across Karen's work via Mark Cardin's KZitem channel 'Draw Mix Paint' where he shows Karens painting qualities that make her work outstanding. When I was learning how to paint, one word changed the course of my painting and drawing skills to a whole new level. That word was: Value. My four favourite contemporary painters : . Karen Offutt, Ruth Fitton,Coleen Barry and Suchitra Bhosle

I had a Quick Painting class at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and we painted over 75 paintings in one semester. We did regular exercises of 5 min, 10 min, 20 min paintings. It forces the student to focus on the essentials of value and composition and not get distracted by the details.

Jeff, I just love your podcasts. You have a gift of bringing out the best in your guests! Karen’s work is exquisite! I started painting late in life because of family circumstances but am so excited to start again ( even in my older age😂🤪). Thank you for inspiring so many!

Another great podcast. I listened while I painted(as always). Keep up the good work. Could you try and have Mike Carson on the podcast, please? Thanks a lot.
