It's time to leave the coast behind for a little while and head for Karijini National Park!
We've been looking forward to visiting Karijini for years, and we're finally at her doorstep. Deep in the Pilbara and iron ore country lies one of this country's most stunning areas to explore. Deep gorges, beautiful cool freshwater swimming and spectacular waterfalls await, and we're more excited than a seagull with a chip.
After re-stocking in Port Hedland, we begin our way south towards Karijini on the Great Northern Highway. As the sun continued its gentle descent toward the horizon, we stumbled upon a cracking little roadside camp on the banks of the mostly-dry Yule River.
The following day it's on to Hamersley Gorge, in the northern section of Karijini. This incredible gorge is accessed via a short but steep walk down into a fantastic waterhole. The water was more than a little fresh, but we had a great time exploring the lower gorge. A packed dinner meant we could stay and enjoy the gorge until late afternoon.
That night we enjoyed one of the best free camps we've been to yet! Set high up on the range, we were rewarded with a stunning Karijini sunset and had the place all to ourselves!
Join us next week as we explore the rest of Karijini National Park and discover some absolute gems.
