I met Karl Malden when I was a kid at Sundance in the 80’s. I really liked The Streets of San Francisco and my mom was very nervous about me meeting a “celebrity”. He was eating alone and I went and talked to him. He was a kind, funny, generous man who didn’t have a mean bone in his body. I’m so glad he was the first celebrity I met because he really set the tone for how I treat people when I meet them first time(I’m not a celebrity). As a kid I thought if someone like him could take the time to be kind, I certainly could.

I think Marlon knew he's dying, he wanted to say goodbye to Karl that's why he called him. Karl was one of few men that Marlon respected in his life.

Brando was a genius. True Karl, but you were pretty outstanding yourself.

Marlon would have loved and thanked Karl from the other side, for keeping his memory as an actor and not his private life. Best of friends till the end, Karl made him justice and Marlon couldn't have expected anything less from Karl, a man true to his words.

Malden was a pretty damn good actor himself, if he wasn't Brando wouldn't have worked with him. I think they were both lucky to have found each other, and I think they both knew it

Two great actors and good friends. Interesting how they both died on the same month and day five years apart, on July 1.

I noticed Malden's greatness as the preacher in On the Waterfront and in One Eyed Jacks. They really were great together.

A dependable, hard-working, old-fashioned person. Not going to rock the boat, but often a loyal person with manners. It doesn't necessarily mean narrow minded or rigid, but square folks will generally obey the rules, rather than break them like the rebels such as Brando. That's my take.

Very nice memories of a unique friendship, a strong male bond that lasted to the end of his life. I appreciate Maldens reflections on Brando “the actor” but I think Brando did too much work at the end of his career just for the paycheck , and it sort of diminished what he had done on film in the 1950s, and then later in the 1970s with those memorable turns in The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris and Apocalypse Now.

In early 1980's in NYC on a sun-snowed day, probably 5th Avenue, with snow piles high on every corner I reached one and waited for the light to cross in the 50-ties to 60-ties, so to arrive at the Picasso, my sister's apt. at 58th St. and Second Avenue. I got up a foot high or 2' on a bank of snow and waited. Suddenly, right below my chest arrived 2 or 3 gentleman; one with that memorizing Malden voice mid-tenor... I starred down at his bulbous nose on fire (perhaps they had left a good martini restaurant). I was agape and then the light changed and they cruised ahead of me into obscurity. True.

He's too much of a square to have done that, but I'm sure some serious drinking and antics went on. Malden would have been a great wingman though. And he was trustworthy enough not to gossip. Plus when you're hanging with young Brando, you're bound to score with some of the women who were throwing themselves at Marlon, and didn't quite make the final cut. Karl always struck me as a nice Polish guy who wouldn't swing both ways, even though he was in theatrical field. Great in his own right as an actor.
