Art Practice as a Rejuvenation of Collective Loss and Reconstruction
Insha Manzoor is an upcoming young artist from Kashmir. I have known her as a student of MFA specializing in Painting from Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santniketan since 2013. She is a versatile and talented visual artist who is extremely conscious about her time and surroundings. She has been engaged in reinterpreting her cultural identity in respect to the local practices specially forms of practices that carry the memory of local women and their social and cultural existence. In this respect she has been reworking many of the collective practices in her local community. Re-engaging with everyday motifs and symbols through which Kashmir as an entity has been stereotyped in jthe larger framework of national imagination of the mainland she has been successfully able to deconstruct those models by introducing very personal everyday rituals into a transdisciplinary language that incorporates poetry, knotting, weaving and local knowledge of textile and other local forms into an intertwined network of process, materiality space and performative quality of her practice.
Her practise is fluid and resonates the richness of her tradition that transcends the specificity of a location towards a contemporary sensibility of an open ended landscape of freedom and liberty. Her regular engagement with different social organisation also reflects her multifaceted concerns about the larger ecology of social and cultural coexistence through art. Coming from a landscape of turmoil and subjugation both culturally and politically she has engaged with her immediate reality quite sensitively in reference to a critical appreciation of practice and research. She is precise and reflective about her research process and empathetic to the different nuances of
local traditions.
In this respect She has been also critically acknowledged for her practice and participated in the Kochi Muziris Biennale as a young artist. Moreover, her experience of studying Masters from Royal College of Art, London and later in Harvard University, USA she has emerged as a critically thinking and innovative artist who has reflected a strong inclination towards a socially engaged practitioner.
The present exhibition is her first solo show that will bring together her different explorations with material, form and process into a comprehensive encounter of her research and practise. | wish her all the best and success in life.
