For those who don't quite understand the likelihood of what caused her death, when you are traveling at well over 200 mph, even if only a tiny piece of metal, such as what is suspected that came from part of the track's light/timing system mounted between the racing lanes that her car struck during the run........flies up & hits your helmet, it is just about as bad as the bullet from a gun striking you. Remember, these crash helmets are not designed to withstand small "piercing projectiles".......they are designed to protect your head from an impact, such as being slammed into a wall or the pavement beneath you. This is the claim they are making as of right now, that actually caused her death. When rescue personnel raced to her aid, they found her already expired. Such a small piercing projectile would certainly cause that kind of damage. This happened BEFORE her car kept rolling & lightly hit the right side retainer wall, and then stopped by lightly running into a tire barrier further down the track. Terrible tragedy.

@@brianbooher7318 I believe you. Years ago, I was riding my Kaw 750 about 110 mph on a long straight with no traffic around during the day. One of the biggest dragonflies ( of all things ) I've ever seen, was hovering over my lane. I only had time to duck & bow my head, looking straight down. That dragonfly struck the top of my full face helmet so hard, I thought it broke it. To me, it felt & sounded like a bullet striking it. It didn't break of course, but imagine if that had been a bolt, screw, or some other small piece of metal that flew out of a passing truck traveling in the opposing lane towards me. I would most likely be dead.

Such a tragedy. And so unusual. "A piece of debris"? Something that was lying on the track, or that came off the other car? Today's drivers are so well protected it's hard to imagine debris even getting into the cockpit.

"SEBRING, Fla. -- A 24-year-old jet dragster racer died Thursday night when she was hit by a piece of debris after her car struck a timing device, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said. Katarina "Kat" Moller was doing an exhibition run around 8 p.m. at Sebring International Raceway, 113 Midway Drive, when the car drifted toward the center line. As it crossed the line, the car hit the device."

Those timing"devices"are foam blocks with some reflectors, you can't get killed by foam.More to this story and yes 40yrs drag racing experience.

colin munro I have to disagree. Even very light objects can be lethal if pushed fast enough. I’m no expert on drag cars or jet cars but I do know they’re both capable of very high speeds. I’d have to know how fast she was going to get a good idea though.

@@hardlylivin6602 maybe straight thru the visor but not thru a helmet they do sfi impact tests so there's atleast some data on penetrating accidents and how much force is required to penetrate helmets, there's more to this story than they are telling, plus jet dragsters tend to have female drivers. With not a lot of very high speed experience

colin munro I believe there may be more to this story as well. But the object wouldn’t have needed to go through the helmet. It would only have to impact it at a certain speed to cause blunt force trauma. Even with the helmet in the way that energy has to go somewhere. And at those speeds, that’s a lot of energy potential. That is assuming it was a direct hit of course. But like you, I think there’s more to this story than what we know.

For foam to pierce a helmet it would have to have velocity in the thousands not hundreds. A screw sure it might, not foam at 200mph.

I think all those drivers know that each time they strap themselves to that seat could be their last. At least they pass on doing something they love doing.

She died doing what she loved is what they'll say, which is true but w/every tragedy on any race Trac we must learn from this & make sure it can't happen.NASCAR & Indy car have.since dale Earnhardt & Dan Weldon Hahn devices & walls on the Trac are forgiving.as well as the cockpit protection for wind screens & halos in f1.we love high speed racing but we love seeing drivers walk away from horrific crashes that are associated w/high speed.
