@akramtorabzadeh2254

people are calling her that because she put bianca on the spot very often, though I don't remember tge movie that clearly , I do remember that the movie kind of demonized femininity , cause a lot of the female characters that were traditionally feminine, were either an "attention begging hoe" or " someone with low self respect" or " someone who wanted male validation" , while that's really not the case, kat is a very good character , but not flawless.

Not sure if people noticed this, but that's mainly because girls and women in media cannot just be. They have to fit a trope, or somehow tie in with how society would perceive their motives, conduct, fashion, language etc. Kat's not even that weird, but it s the same dillema as with gate-keeping sports and video games. If a girl likes them she must be doing it for the attention, otherwise she should 'prove' herself whatever that means. Just goes to show we still live in a society where most women do have internalised misogyny to a certain degree.

People need to stop with the “not like other girls” thing. If anything, she was the opposite of that because she did not want male attention whatsoever and everything she did was simply what she wanted to do, not a form of internalized misogyny to shame other girls for being feminine. In fact, she was a feminist. A true not like other girls is doing it to seem quirky and appealing to men. And not every body fits the social norms or likes mainstream things, this doesn’t mean they just do it to seem cool.

@lg5627

I only like the phrase when it’s deserved. Aka the pick me girls because they are typically anti-women/ anti-feminist just to impress insecure losers with no respect. But with anything else the phrase has taken a life of it’s own (like the term “Karen”) and people use it everywhere even when it doesn’t fit or is not deserved. I can at least see where people would think Kat is, but she isn’t a true “not like other girls” girl. She’s more of one of the girls in this movie than ones of the guys. She just happens to dress more like a tomboy. That’s it. But I agree that pretty much all these new terms can be toxic, because they take a life of their own and can end up berating people unwarranted

Kat doesn't think that her sister should stop dressing like or being a girly girl she just wants her to stop being inauthentic to herself as in constantly getting drunk at parties and dating losers like the one she was with. Kat had a problem with her sister undermining herself and dumbing herself down to be around her so called "friends". If she was really the "I'm not like other girls" type her best friend would have been one of her first targets since she loves Shakespeare and romance. Kat is against popularity and the fake things that come with it and she was trying to protect her sister from it. Now there are "feminists" (if you can even really call them that) that are the "I'm not like other girls" type because they only support women like themselves that are sporty, booksmart, skinny, and/or tomboyish. Though Kat is sporty, tomboyish, skinny, and loves to read books she doesn't ever shame any girls for being interested in things that she isn't interested in if they genuinely love it. She also calls joey out on his sexist mysoginistic macho behavior and even her boyfriend sometimes too. I'm a girly girl and I never really had a problem with Kat infact she was very inspirational for a lot of young girls to speak their mind which in the 90s was still not very common and if a female character did do that she would be mocked on the story or something.

Since people are calling her a pick me, It’s literally called “pick me” meaning they want to be you know...picked. That’s not her intention. The whole metaphor is stupid anyway, it’s just a tiktok trend that people follow and use over and over as if it’s actually funny because someone used it once. In fact the whole pick me thing had been blown way out of proportion and is used now in any case a woman doesn’t conform to “feminine” hobbies or self expression, which has been turned anti-feminist because it’s used to combat women who “don’t like makeup” or other things of the sort, which sounds like a cringey disney channel movie, made in 2016. The whole idea behind the metaphor was to call out women who made fun of other women for liking “feminine” things, but in turn makes fun of women who don’t like “feminine” things. Honestly it’s like we just keep going in circles and don’t put actual thought into advocacy anymore and instead just use pathetic tiktok terms for a few years until it finally dies out, then we make fun of that old metaphor while using new ones: the circle of social media and brain dead conformity.

@@KnivingDispodia I just found out that his play Romeo and Juliet was based off the Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes movie - didn't even bother to change the name. Shakespeare really needs to stop stealing all of his ideas from teen movies.
