For context, I'm a software developer that has worked on haptic and interactive hardware in the same medium. I feel like the lack of an automatic strafe and backpedaling through foot placement is a design flaw, and is kinda lazy. The need for a specific unnatural gesture to indicate an action outside of moving forward could've been avoided by having a slightly more robust translation of movement through the foot sensors. There could be hardware constraints, but it seems like this could be fixed with a driver update. There should ideally be no change in price of the product.

I would love to see an update to allow strafing and backpedaling. I have zero knowledge of that, but your comment gives me hope!
@turnipthebase4199

That's what wrote it off for me. I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more to have full directional capability, but like you said, it should just be able to read the placement of the two sensors. Having to turn 100% in the direction I want to move seems like it would be really unnatural and annoying.

You just earned yourself a subscriber! Keep up the good work… After doing some research on this product it does look pretty nice! The price isn’t too steep and I’m sure it will be on sale at some point for roughly $1000 or so. That being said, I am still not convinced to pull the trigger yet. It is best to wait till haptic feedback and wireless VR technology improves, and a few more options to choose from with competitors. The wire twisting would cause a problem for long term gaming. Also you have wall mount it with a spring loaded pulley for a cleaner setup which is also a pain in the neck. Combine that with the disadvantage that the “treadmill” does not support full range walking in reverse or side to side would really break the immersion for me. I do however have hope that within the next year or two we will see a much better product with a similar price. I cannot wait for that to happen, would love to go back and play my favorite VR games with one of these and they haptic vest! These features can’t come soon enough during this lockdown…

How has it been on your knees? I have a Katwalk C2 and a Virtuix Omni (in different locations) and found that the Katwalk has been pretty hard on my knees. Pain along the top of the knee to be specific. In contrast, the Omni seems to strengthen my knee muscles. My suspicion is that the Omni allowing you to lean forward more naturally, with the ring supporting you, prevents any abnormal impact when running. Where the katwalk keeps you in place, preventing you from leaning forward, the impact on the knees is more dramatic.

Nice video, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm curious if you've had anyone a little shorter try it? (I'm 5'4")
@AustinVR

Thank you! There is definitely a learning curve with the sliding motion but overall the immersion can be pretty grand. It kinda has the same effect as playing VR versus playing on desktop, Desktop is far better visually but being in VR and in your environment is far more immersive even when it is not as visually stunning. Get into the settings of the Kat as well as whatever game you are playing to see if tweaking some settings help. (Some games have built in features to help with motion sickness.)

@@AustinVR considering that from what I understood, physically, it is possible to step sideways and backwards, its just not properly replicated in game, so even if it is a hardware issue, its with the foot trackers (wich are way cheaper), and not with the shoes and floorstation, so maybe later they'll add a way to properly do side and back steps, even if it needs external sensors and/or new feet trackers, I think it would be worth it For now, this is a first of its class for consumers at an """affordable""" price, so its still a good product Love your vids :)

After using this a while, how have you found you deal with strafing and moving backwards in games? Let's say you want to sidestep an incoming arrow in Skyrim, or step out from behind a pillar to shoot a suppressor in Alyx while it's reloading, or step backwards to dodge a sword swing in Blade & Sorcery. Do you tend to use the 'foot gestures and are they fast enough? Do you turn your body to the side and walk, and is that fast enough? Or do you (can you, even) just tap your thumbstick a little to use the same movement control you would have without the Kat Walk C?
@AustinVR
3 жыл бұрын
Great question. So far I’ve found that small quick movements such as dodging can pulled off just by moving your head out of the way, I would love to say that the gestures are super intuitive and responsive but I find myself just using the thumb stick when put in a tight situation. The gesture definitely do work though, I just don’t find myself using them when I need to act fast.

Its hard to trust a review when you have an affiliate link in your description. I apologize if that's rude, but there has been a lot of deception in the VR industry, particularly surrounding hardware, and finding objective reviews seems impossible.

I totally understand that. If it's any consolation, I posted this review video before having an affiliate link. I was contacted after the fact and haven't changed the video since the initial upload. I don't benefit much from the link but they were kind enough to offer it. At this point, I still stand by what I say in the video. Later on down the road, I plan on revisiting it and seeing how it holds up. Feel free to ask any questions you have about it and ill give you my honesty option.

@@AustinVR I appreciate the response and the clarification. If the review was made without any prior financial benefit arranged then I have no problem with it! I look forward to seeing your down-the-road review to see if its still held up. Keep up the good work :)
