Not sure if it is commented, but historically Marin is the least acceptable place to ride a mountain bike and has the most restrictive residents. LIving here in the Bay Area, unless you are doing XC on one of the few trails available in Marin County, it is worth skipping Marin and going to Santa Cruz or Napa to ride. Lots of enforcement and few new trails going up over the past 40 years. I hear its changing, but the local NIMBYs have far more control over land managers than anyone else. Hopefully having people like Kate (deep Marin family roots and having public success in MTB will help change that).
@siriosstar4789

I grew up there in the fifties . as the years went on and marin became more populated so did the trails . the weekends there can be like a traffic jam with bikes and hikers competing for the same space . at first the parks department placed speed limits on downhill riding but the mixing of MTBs and hikers just became to problematic so the hikers won out .

You have a great setup, that’s the life. I use to race XC in the early 90’s as an amateur. Living in Pasadena California I had all the local mountains to train in, within a 15 minute ride from my house. The most memorable rides were with my Doberman Pincher, she made the whole ride worth riding. A canine riding partner is the best. I’m 66 years of age now, and I still ride those same trails. Just not as intense or as far. Nothing like being up the canyon away from the city for peace and quiet. I want to wish you all the best in the Tokyo Olympics. I’ll be cheering you on. 🥳

I used to live in Marin and I will say that for being the birth place of MTB lots of people there really don’t like it. like rangers really don’t like people building their own stuff. I was part of a little group of people that would go to a place called deer park where there was a jump line that me and my friends maintained and it had been there for years and a lot of us rode there when we were really young but then out of the blue the rangers just came and tore down something that had been there for years and was a really cool spot for everyone that liked MTB no matter what age.

Kate Courtney's Backyard Is ONE OF THREE PLACES OF The Birthplace Of Modern Mountain Biking. The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA), founded in 1983, is the oldest mountain bike club in the world. Crested Butte 'Klunkers' like myself were riding Hagerman, Independence, Pearl, Kebler, Ohio and Frigid Air Pass pass on modified cruiser bicycles. Our first big event in 1976… A bunch of guys ride their one-speed klunkers over Pearl Pass to Aspen or a beer. In a way, the whole thing started out as a joke. The original home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, was founded in Crested Butte, Colorado in 1988. So in Cali. you may be riding at 5,00 feet, or sea level, however in Colorado we ride 14,000 feet in the clouds!!!

Vislas are probably in the top-3 breeds that are capable of doing "big" miles like this. The main thing is dogs aren't built as endurance machines - they're sprinters. So, you have to stop and let them cool and drink. I have friends with medium sized gun dogs (GSP, mixed hounds - all in the 40-50lb range) that do 10-15 miles of rolling singletrack. Just gotta leave them home in August (Virginia, USA).
@1911Zoey

Depends on the breed. Belgians and German Shepherds are quite capable of long distance hikes.
