Kate is a beautiful soul. What she said about Meryl Streep was so genuine & magnanimous. I fell I. Love with Kate when she did Sense & Sensibility & even more so in Titanic. She deserves all the accolades she’s getting. So deserving.

Since I love both Meryl and Kate to bits, it must be the reason why I can't stop crying while watching this. If I ever become a Hollywood Director, making a movie with Meryl and Kate in it would be in the very top of my priorities.

Kate Winslet was actually closest to nabbing the Academy Award on her first nomination, in 1995, for "Sense and Sensibility". She had lost the Globe to Sorvino, but had rebounded at the SAG awards with a win. Sorvino ultimately won. Her next nomination, "Titanic", in 1997- was great, but she was not considered the favorite. It was between Globe winners Judi Dench ("Mrs. Brown") and eventual Oscar winner Helen Hunt ("As Good As It Gets"). In 2001, she received her third nod in Best Supporting Actress for "Iris"; she lost to Jennifer Connelly in "A Beautiful Mind"- again, she was not considered strong to win. 2004 rolled around and she got her second Lead Actress nod for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"; but again, she was not a strong horse. It was capped as a rematch between Annette Bening and Hilary Swank for their respective performances in "Being Julia" and "Million Dollar Baby". Swank took it. In 2006, arguably the strongest list EVER in the Best Actress race for the 2000s emerged: the nominees were Winslet in "Little Children", Penelope Cruz in "Volver", Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada", Judi Dench in "Notes on a Scandal" and the winner- Helen Mirren in "The Queen". Winslet was not in the race again, though- as it was deemed a three-way match between Globe winners Streep and Mirren, and Judi Dench (who had still never won lead). But Mirren was a lock for the win. Finally 2008 rolled around. The nominees were Angelina Jolie in "Changeling", Melissa Leo in "Frozen River", Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married", Meryl Streep in "Doubt" and Kate Winslet in "The Reader". Winslet was FINALLY a lock for the frontrunner status. Taking double Golden Globe wins for both "The Reader" (in supporting) and "Revolutionary Road" (lead) and then the SAG for supporting in the former, her main competition was Streep in "Doubt"- who won the lead SAG. But Winslet also had the BAFTA and media on her side, and so she won the Oscar on her 6th nomination. As of 2013, she has yet to be nodded again.

Her main competition was Streep and Hathaway. Apparently Hathaway was supposed to win the Globe and many critics and audience predicted she might win the Oscar as well.

Wrong on so many levels. In 1997 Hunt was the runway favorite. Dench didn't stand a chance. In 2004 Benning didn't stand a chance either. Helen Mirren did not have any competition in 2006, she was the favourite to win from the moment she got the role.

I really don’t understand how could Helen Hunt win with such a mediocre performance, when kate’s performance was by far the best female performance of 1997. that should have been her first Oscar.
