I remember watching this on TV, back in 1990, and I recorded it back then. But it was videotape and, well you can imagine! I was so sad! Thanks so much for posting this now, allowing me to get it back!

Thank you so much for posting this. I saw the concert 23 years ago and never forgot it. In case people don't recognize her, the lady in the balcony who is shown at the end of "In That Great Gettin' Up Mornin'" and "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands" is the great contralto, Marian Anderson.

So beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes. Glad I was watching this in the privacy of my home rather than in that vast audience.

You don't know what this clip meant to me. When in high school, I listened to the whole performance on the radio for just this one time, but the song has been stuck in my head ever since, and I tried so many times to find out who sang the songs and was in vain. Thank you for uploading these wonderful clips. I am literally so happy I could die.:))

When I see a program such as this, American artists singing America's music, I think "This music is genuine alchemy." Spirituals were the artistic transmutation of the suffering directed at enslaved people by the ignorance of those who should have acted with greater humanity. From darkness emerged this light. A lesson for our own troubled time. It seems like we are more ignorant than ever, in the way we treat others, in the way we dishonor the promise of this once great country. How did we get so far from the things that define us in the best way?
