The 20+ hour journey from Kathmandu into Solu Khumbu uses a new route along the Sun Koshi valley in 2013. Although the roads are still being made, there is now service bus access to Okhaldhunga and Salleri direct from Kathmandu.
Leaving Kathmandu past the Shiva statue, the B.P. Koirala Highway, also known as the Banepa Bardibas Highway, provides the only significant exit eastwards from the Kathmandu valley and is due for completion in 2014 or thereafter. Sections of the road have existed for decades, but Japanese contractors are now building an all-season surfaced road. It already has cut the journey distance between Kathmandu and Biratnagar by around 200km.
A seasonal route along the Sun Koshi is now being developed and will be a first and major east-west route through the middle hills. As a result of the new route the settlement of Ghurmi has sprung up beside the road at the Sun Koshi river crossing. The settlement is so new it is not shown on maps. Speculative land plotting on the north bank suggests that it is expected to grow more. Photos of the ferry: • सुनकोशी The Sun Koshi...
The road from Harkapur, on the north bank of the Sun Koshi, to Okhaldhunga is being funded by the Asian Development Bank and is upgrading motarable dry season tracks, making them accessible for local buses as far as Salleri.
The soundtrack is the splendid music of 1974AD. How embarrassing that their 2017 UK tour had to be cancelled as they could not get UK visas!
