As a teenager in NJ, I once experienced the same event from the ground. We were dismissed from school after the first edge of the hurricane hit and I walked home from the school bus stop to witness the 360 degree eye wall of that hurricane from ground level. I made it home just in time when the other side hit our house. There was no wind, no sound, just sunshine and calm in the eye of that storm. Beautiful but scary to see.

Because they are from NOAA; they're called "Hurricane Hunters", and it's their job to take either a WP-3D Orion turboprop or a WC-130 turboprop and fly into hurricanes and take measurements and samples, to help better understand and track the storms future path. It's a pretty dangerous job, but the sort that people who enjoy thrills like (even though sometimes they don't survive). I think it sounds pretty fun. It's an important job, and someone has got to do it.
