I fell in love with them when I was a volunteer at Kibbutz Ein Harod, and they played the theater there right before the Yom Kippur War began. Their songs offered wonderful lessons in Israeli humor. They were just as great at their 25th anniversary concert at the Beacon Theater in New York.

The Grocery Story by Danny Sanderson He was born, sad and unnecessary, to the Kimmel family, and immediately changed his name to Eudokolis Lipshitt. He grew up in a village so small, that if there were a wedding there, then the groom would also have been the bride. His mother and father were his only parents, a circumstance which affected him gravely for all the days of his life. They tried (of course) to cheer him up, and would say “Cheer up, son. Things could be a lot worse.” So he cheered up, and indeed, things got a lot worse. Across from his humble home there was a penurious, dilapidated shack, and in it, there lived a penurious, dilapidated girl. Every morning she would play catch outside her house - by herself. And Eudokolis, on his way to school, would observe her, and smile at her with laughing eyes, but she would turn to him with a light and delicate smile and tell him: “git on.” They called her Silvia Bumper. IF they called her! When they called her. But luck ran out, and a saddening tragedy struck the Kimmel family. Eudokolis’s father who was Asia’s champion… in pickup-sticks… was badly injured, subsequently to falling upon his pickup-sticks. For her part, Eudokolis’s mother came down with a terrible veterinary disease, and grew a tail. Eudokolis understood that it was up to him to take the family yoke upon his shoulders. He didn’t hesitate for a moment, and ran away from home. He wandered days and nights, without nourishment, without food, without nothin’. Until one day he met an old man sitting on the roadside - crying. Eudokolis asked him, with laughing eyes: “Wherefore, old man, do you cry interminably?” The old man answered him with answering eyes: “My brakes went. Plus, I have a thorn in my foot.” Eudokolis took out the thorn, and replaced it. The old man said: “Aye!” and disappeared. That same night, Eudokolis lay on the roadside. And even as the spiderwebs of dreams and ordinary filth covered his face, the image of Silvia Bumper - the little girl from the little village, the love of his life - rose before his eyes, dressed in gym pants, perforated loafers and an Ace bandage. Her shedding hair rose up and floated off in the wind. Her arms reached out to him and nearly touched him and then --- At the same moment, Eudokolis felt a soft hand caressing his entire body. He opened his eyes - with laughing eyes, you understand - and at his side, he found the old man, and he was very very very friendly. The old man turned to him and said to him: IF YOU CONTINUE THIS WAY, YOU’LL FUCK IT UP, YA SCHMENDRIK. BUILD YOURSELF A GROCERY STORE. THERE, YOU SHALL FIND YOUR FORTUNE! Not twenty years went by. Fifteen did. And Eudokolis found himself behind the counter: a grocery store owner, proud and contented. And from day to day, and sometimes even in the middle of the week, Silvia Bumper would come, and in her clear voice would say to him - “Do you have any 15 and a half percent fat cheese?” -and continue on her way. “14 percent fat?” -and continue on her way. “12 percent?” -and CONTINUE ON HER WAY! And then the prices went up, and the customers stopped coming. And dust covered the shelves of the store, and spiders and bugs found their homes between the yogurt and the milk, the bread and the chocolate, the plated wines - and the glowing face of Silvia Bumper was not seen again, and didn’t fill the vacuum that remained in Eudokolis’s heart. The only thing left to him was memory. And on cold winter nights, Eudokolis sits, sad and unnecessary, and sings - The Grocery Song I remember her! I remember her from the grocery store I remember her! I remember her buying Cream of Wheat And she let me hold her Redi-Whip And she asked me for bottles of soda. I remember her! I remember her from the grocery store I remember her! I remember her buying Cream of Wheat I remember her buying rye bread, I remember her way back from third grade… grade… Gimme demoney and I'll give you my heart- She’ll cross the street and return to the grocery Recording the IDF station and catching an immigration from Russia - just a minute! - Shmariahu villiage. I remember her! I remember her from the grocery store I remember her! She had a nose and mouth like a chicken’s And she said that she likes mandarins And eats the peels of clemantines… tines… Give more sour cream and pass the butter- What’s this? Ya got no money? Then go home! What would you do if you were born a year Before they invented the grocery?? She goes to the grocery and buys a chicken and Goes to the grocery and buys a chicken and Goes to the grocery and buys a chicken and Goes to the grocery and buys a chicken- I remember her! Oooh - from the grocery… Eeeh - buys Cream of Wheat… And so, there sits Eudokolis Lipshitt, sad and unnecessary. And the tears stream from his eyes without end… without end… without end… without end… without end… without end… it’s no big deal… it’s no big deal… it’s no big deal… it’s no big deal… and chews… and chews… she chews… and chews… it’s not Joseph (huh?)… it’s not Joseph (huh?)… it’s not Joseph (huh?)… it’s not Joseph (ah?)… it’s not Joseph (huh?)… it’s not Joseph (no)… it’s not Joseph (no)… it’s not Joseph (yeah)… and that’s that… and that’s that… and that’s that!
