Thank you for posting your initial impressions, Chuck. We appreciate the level of detail in your videos, and this one certainly covers a lot of ground. It's perhaps also worth mentioning that the four EQ frequency bands are freely adjustable, and that each sound section can be given a specific key range, in addition to the standard upper/lower split. Keep up the great work.

Thanks a lot, Chuck. I enjoy your every video. Everything so simple and clear. No vague technical terms, no muffled words. Probably you are a bit in love hence impartial to this device. Anyway I got almost everything about it I wanted to know. Though it wouldn't harm to mention some drawbacks from your point of view, apart from the weight. For example the rather loud key noise that I definitely heard on other videos when the sound was off.

I'm not sure how others record their videos, perhaps their microphones were picking up key noise / fingernails striking the keys? But I've found the MP11 to have one of the most quietest key action of all - I remember demonstrating this in one of my videos but can't remember which one off the top of my head.

Always great explanations. Better that going to one of those NAMM Shows. While your telling us about a particular model, your also painting a broader picture of what the industry standard, technology wise is based around. Helpful when we see other instruments on the net or in store making comparisons. Very enjoyable.

Very good demonstration Chuck. I would like to see you walk through a demo of putting a song together, using the reverb and eq, strings and drums. This Kawai looks like a fantastic board and for the money and weight it ought to be. Thanks for sharing. Sam.

Discovered recently your videos are amazing, i relly appreciate so much your passion and precision in your videos. Thank you very much. I come to my question: what piano keyboard would you recommend to start with for home use: a simple controller like Arturia? or may be better a slab with voices/styles included like a Casio or Yamaha keyboard?

Really enjoy your videos... very helpful. I will likely be ordering mine this week. Quick question... in one of your mp11 videos you used an additional unit to add sounds such as guitar and organ. Can you tell me the name of that device? Thanks again Tom

What settings do you use for classical music? Just asking your own personal settings and not what you think is the best because that is subjective.

Does the sub-section have harpsichord? And, if so, can the harpsichord sound and the piano sound be mixed (layered) together? And finally, if it can, will you do that for me so I can hear how it sounds? I know that's asking alot but what the heck I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm thinking of buying this piano for a show I'm doing this summer. What I'm actually going for is a sort of Pianoforte sound. Or, a sound that harkens to an old 18th century piano. I don't want to use an actual pianoforte sampling, which can be gotten, because that requires a computer program, which I don't want to use in the show.

Hi Chuck, very nice description. I am undecided whether to buy a NORD stage 2 EX or a Kawai MP11. I am a beginner, with experience on classical guitar. From you presentations I deduce that the Kawai should be the optimal choice for the action. In fact I have played it and I have clearly noticed the difference. But I love the sounds on the Nord. Would you recommend a Nord or a Kawai in my case? Also, can I add the Nord sounds via Midi to the Kawai? Thanks a lot Chuck, thanks for your nice videos. Thumbs up!

+profilo vecchio - As for Nord or Kawai for you, watch this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pIyJ2aGPfJl-nGk Kawai is NOT a sampler, you can not add sounds to it, but you can use it as a controller to play other MIDI sound sources (ie: if you had both the Kawai and the Nord, you could play the Nord from the Kawai keybed).

I've heard alot of people saying you need to have an acoustic piano to learn classical music. What is your opinion Chuck? Is it possible learning how to play classical music AND making it sound good on a Kawai VPC 1, MP11 etc?

Michael Engström Depends on you... you'll need to have a piano teacher evaluate you (get a couple of teacher's opinions after they evaluate you).

I have been investigating buying an electronic piano and am confirmed on my decision to buy a Kawai for sure, but which one I'm still up in the air. I'm a returning student to the piano, I only received 2 years of formal training (although I played flute in band for 6 years so I'm not totally ignorant). We got a piano for free, little spinet and at the age of 57 my love for music has returned and I want to learn to play. I'm not into performing, except for family, but I want the experience of playing all the voices, mixing, matching, layering, creating my own sounds, my own music, maybe to even use on garden utube video. I think this is the piano for me, my budget is about 3 k. I am wondering, because I dont need the portability, would I be better served in getting an electronic piano that stays put, would I get better value or is there really no difference in this price range. The only reason portability has value to me, is if we move houses after husband retires, and we would need to move the piano. I love your reviews, you have helped to wisen me greatly!

Your reviews are very informative and helpful Chuck! Trying to choose between the MP11 and Yamaha CP4. Seems like the Yamaha has a bit better reverb (i really like it as a fake compensator for lack of room feeling in digital pianos), but the MP11 wooden keys are 100% wooden, where only the top of the Yamaha key is wooden. Which one would you buy? =)

I really would like to see MP7 review. I think this is one of the best instrument in its class. I think MP7 is good alternative to MP11. It is cheaper, but has some advantages over MP11. 1) It is noticeably lighter and more compact. 2) It has more sounds, including classical church and pipe organs. I was very wondered and disappointed when found out, that MP11 doesn’t have classical organ sounds. They put inside MP11 some marimba, bass and other sounds, but didn’t put classical organs! And this is instrument, aimed on classical pianists. I really don’t understand their logic, and sure 100% this is big mistake. Only this mistake enough for me to skip this instrument and look on MP7. 3) MP7 can playback 16-channel MIDI-files. MP11 can’t do this. Both have Virtual Technician feature. BUT! MP11 has 10 parameters, MP7 has 9 ones. Which one is missing? Brilliance is missing in MP7! Why they have excluded this parameter? And how critical it is? I don’t know. Any thoughts? P.S. Some people complain about Grand Feel action in MP11. They say it is too light. That’s make me worry, because I don’t like light keyboard actions. I prefer to practice on quite heavy keyboard actions.

***** I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the MP11 vs the MP7. The MP7 is a general purpose stage piano, whereas the MP11 is more of a professional pianist's piano. You cannot have organ with a true piano keyboard action, nor would you want to... that's why organ is not part of the MP11. Also, the action is configurable on the MP11... you can make it light, heavy, or have it create an action based on your playing style.... I suggest you locate an MP11 somewhere and play around with the velocity settings.

Thank you Chuck for reply. Well, let's look for example at KAWAI CA95 digital piano. How do you think for whom it's aimed to? I think also for professional pianists. And it's definitely not a general purpose stage piano. And it has the same Grand Feel keyboard action as MP11 has. But CA95 has such a classical sounds as Harpsichords and Church Organ. The same with KAWAI CS10 with Grand Feel action, which looks exactly like a classical upright piano. And it's also has church and other types of organs and harpsichords. And there is a lot of other digital pianos (stage and cabinet style) on the market with piano keyboard action, and they have classical Organ sound. I don't see any problems here, and for me it's not an argument about MP11. About keyboard setups like light, heavy etc. It's just touch curves, they don't make keyboard *physically* more heavy. I agree with you that the best way is to try them personally. But in my region it's absolutely impossible. No MP7, no MP11. Only pay in advance and make an order. Thank you for your videos. They are interesting and helpful.

***** The CA series is aimed at the home or family. Its a beautiful cabinet / furniture piece in addition to being a functional instrument. It has finger exercises, aimed at the new pianist, or in the case of a family, for the learning son/daughter. Organs are there for fascination/curiosity... but I reiterate, you won't find an organ player that's going to take wooden piano keysticks (balanced on a fulcrum) seriously! Have you ever played a real or church organ before? They're not graded, not weighted, not hammer action, not wooden, etc...
@Oleg__

Chuck, have you ever played a real violin before? But we have this instrument in MP11. So? I know that organ have different technics of playing from acoustic piano, but that's not the reason to exlude this sound from the instrument because in this case we can tell the same thing about all other none-keyboard instruments. For examle, let's take strings. Absolutely different technics of playing between acoustic piano and violins (even more far, than organ from piano). But that's not the reason to exclude this beautiful strings sound from the digital keyboard instruments. And practically all synthesizers and digital pianos have strings sound. I mean synthesizers and digital pianos can imitate a lot of various instruments. But they had never imitate *_technics of playing_* of those instruments. And there's no reason even to try, it's impossible. And that's not the reason to refuse them and exclude from synthesizers and digital pianos. I mean we don't need to use MP11 to practice to play on a real organ. We also don't try to use MP11 or other keyboards to practice to play on a real violins, guitars, trumpets drums etc. just because the technics of playing has absolutely nothing to do with an acoustic piano. But that's not the reason to refuse all those instruments. And fortunately we don't.

Just found today interesting message on one of the piano forums. Message from person, who works in KAWAI. He spoke about playing organ sounds on a weighted action keyboard: "… the RHII action has 3 velocity sensors (s1, s2, s3), and all three are utilised when playing piano sounds in order to accurately measure the speed at which notes are played and released. However, organs are typically velocity insensitive (i.e. their character/volume does not change depending on the speed at which notes are played). Therefore when selecting the MP7's tonewheel organ mode, the keyboard automatically selects a fixed touch curve. As such, we no longer need to use all three sensors to measure velocity, so can instead freely select which sensor (s1, s2, s3) should be used to trigger the note. This makes the keyboard action feel very 'fast', and allows authentic organ-style playing on a weighted action that would otherwise be more difficult to achieve."
