LP, I got in touch with my friend about what he used to soften up his air box boot. He used a mixture of wintergreen oil (100%) and rubbing alcohol. He purchased the wintergreen oil on Amazon. He used 1 to 2 drops in about a 1/2 cup of the alcohol. His boot started getting flexibly in about 24 hours. He also mentioned that the boot should be oil and grime free. There's a lot of information online about using this method both good and bad. I think the key is to just carefully keep an eye on it. Hope this helps my friend!

I have faith that you will be able to fix this and have it running in no time. Looks like you got your work cut out for you though! 😮 But if I know you, you won't give up until it is running fine. 😊 Good luck LP!

LP get yourself an ultrasonic cleaner! Harbor freight carries them at a reasonable price. Also a buddy of mine has a 78 Suzuki that had the rubber so hard, and when he got it apart, he followed a recipe that he found on the web and he soaked the rubber in this solution and the rubber softened up.

@@lp.670LP, work and summer duties with the family have kept me busy. Don’t worry, you are on the top of my list I follow 👍🏻 I think maybe I’ve missed one of your posts and just didn’t have the time to respond. I’ll get a hold of my friend about how he and what he soaked his carb to air boxes rubber manifold in to soften it. I also helped him with his carburetor and we cleaned the carb parts in my ultrasonic tank and they came out like new. His bike now runs beautifully. Love those old kickstart bikes! 👍🏻

That is one of the main drawbacks to working on older vehicles, getting older part’s off without breaking anything and you do break a part where in world can you find a replacement, this might be a money tossing at it project.
