I installed a 13 but didn't get the results I was looking for due to the tight single tracks we ride. I went back to a 14 with a 52 rear. It helped when I rode mountain passes in Silverton, CO. I don't have much top end but I try to avoid pavement any way. I did have to get a longer chain with the 52.

13/40 with a MX chain is the best combo for my 300. After trying 4 different combo's, the best turned out to be the cheapest and easiest just by swapping the front like in this vid. Fastest accelerating, just low enough in woods and just high enough for commuting. I tried 14/42 and surprised the 1 tooth difference i could feel between 4-5-6 gears, making the acceleration just a bit slower {about 3-4 mph difference in each gear} A MX non o ring chain gave it a little bump in power also. U could really tell the difference with less friction in the chain by putting the bike on a stand and seeing the difference of the wheel free spinning with that vs the heavier o ring chain.

Is the bike in gear while doing this or neutral?

With the smaller front sprocket you will probably have to take some slack out of the chain. Going back to the original adjustment is probably too loose

I went 13/42 on my 300. So much better offroad. I can still get up over 70mph for short durations, its pretty high in rpms at that point. Better cruising speed around 55 60 now. Chain looked too loose but could just be the way it looked in the video. Spec is 30 to 40mm of play up and down mid way between the front and rear sprocket. Enjoy the increased torque and wheelie power!

Nice!! What brand chain ring did you use for the rear. I didn't notice much slack in chain but honestly I didn't measure just went by feel. I've got about 100mis. on it since the install so I will check it again.

@@mick76 for the rear I used JT Sprockets JTR460.42. Might be able to squeeze a 43 in there with the stock chain but not sure.

I was looking for you to give it some gas to see how it pulls. I'm planning to do the same to my bike, but curious if I need to do the 42t on the back as well.

Another commentor stated the same 13/42t I might try a 42t rear to see how that affects it.

I have 2 questions how is it on road with the 13 and what was the part number of the front sprocket
@tieoneon1614

13/40 i think is the best set up, feels like the bike was made for this gearing. 70mph was at 8k rpm, 60mph was just under 7k rpm. I wouldnt worry bout running the motor at that rpm all day, they are bomb proof. The biggest benefit was 4-5-6 gears are just the right ration apart that the bike pulls great over 50mph now.

What where you doing with the hammer and chisel?

At 8:08 I was using them to bend one side of the washer over the side of the nut. Doing this keeps the nut from potential backing off. The washer is designed for that purpose and is done like that from the factory.

No the Speedo sensor is connected at the front wheel. Different front wheeler tire sizes on the front would affect the reading.

Ok.. but it was $15.00 for the front and took about .5 hr. to swap. I might try a 42t in the rear to see how that affects it.
