What I did was buy an extendable mechanics mirror (costs less than $20). It works superbly as you sit on the bike leveling it. Just peer down at the mirror (angled properly) and the oil sight window is easy to see. Those centre stands add 10lbs to the weight of the bike (though great for polishing the wheels or lubing the chain).

My owners manual says oil level should be checked when the bike is level so when doing an oil change I put the bike on the centre stand and put a piece of wood 20 mm - 3/8” - under the two wheels. This works for me. Bike is original model 2015 with 19” front, 18” rear.

Now I'm curious about my W800. I always check my oil on the center stand, front tire on the ground. I now want to see for myself where my oil is in these four different scenarios. After I satisfy my curiosity, I'm just going to pop the bike up on the center stand and sight check the oil level like I've always done.

I also have a bike you have to pull off side stand to check level, I put side stand down, place a small level across the seat and check the level. That said, I would be tempted to check owner's manual for capacity for a oil and filter change, put this amount into engine while on center stand and check level. Get the engine good and hot before changing and allow engine to drain fully before doing this to get as accurately level as possible. What does it read?

Hi thanks for sharing this info, I just picked up my Cafe yesterday. Where did you purchase your center stand, directly from the dealer?
@turbosteve84

Yes, including the spring, two bolts, two nuts, and the damper that attaches at the bottom of the exhaust. I think I paid around $180 for everything from Cheap Cycle Parts. The stand was considerably more from Partzilla.

@@turbosteve84 Did you replace your left footrest bracket to make clearance for the center stand? My center stand came in today and I noticed that it won't retract all the way because the CAFE ver. footrest bracket gets in the way.

@@ADRP20 No, I cut the "U" loop off of the center stand's lever. It's a little difficult getting your boot onto the lever "foot" to lift the bike on the center stand (the muffler is in the way), but you get used to it.

You'll need to take some new measurements when you upgrade your rear tire to a 120/90 18.

What are the part numbers for the center stand and accessories that are needed? Was the install straight forward?
The only hard part is stretching the centerstand spring before fitting it to the bike. I have images on the Kawasaki W800 Facebook page. The easiest way to stretch it is with a large "U" clamp and a bunch of quarters or washers. When you see the image you'll understand... facebook.com/groups/KawasakiW800Global/search/?query=centerstand&epa=SEARCH_BOX

The oil level reads differently when it's cold. Follow the manual and don't call your Cafe a calf, lol.

You did not indicate whether you did the check as per the riders handbook which states that the engine should be run for a couple of minutes and then switched off. THEN the sight glass level is to be read. The Kawasaki dealer is telling me that at COLD, there will be no oil showing in the sight glass, and this is a feature of other Kawasaki models. Why is this of relevance. I have had a W800 Cafe trucked to me in NSW from SA. Unable to pick the bike up because of Covid border closure. There was no oil showing in the sight glass when the bike came off the truck. I did not start the engine because i feared possible engine damage. I looked at the handbook and spoke to a dealer in Queensland. Both say the engine needs to be warmed up before the level in the sightglass becomes apparent. I ran the engine but there is still no oil showing in the window. My argument with the selling dealer is that obviously no pre delivery check was done. I am now getting the run around (dealer says to just top up the oil) . Not going to happen. It needs to go to a dealer in Queensland (the nearest) . So - does the oil level show in the window BEFORE you start the bike. Don't suggest I go back to the seller - I am now 2000kms away.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to look into this further. Don't know how a hot engine with oil up in the head gives you an accurate reading, but there have been stranger things. Think about that handbook recommendation for a moment. Start the engine until it gets warm, then check the oil level. What if it doesn't show in the sight glass at all? Then you just ran your engine with -- what? -- little to no oil in the cases (possibly as in your situation.) But, again, I will look into this further. I did notice that if I check the oil (cold engine) on the center stand, then put it on the side stand, and then return it to the center stand, the oil level changes. Not by much, but nonetheless noticeably. I'm thinking there's some unusual baffling in the cases that causes these dissimilar readings. In your case I would drain the oil (if any), measure it, and compare it to the recommended capacity. It should be a little lower since there's still oil clinging to the engine internals. But it's a good place to start. Here in the States, you don't need to bring your new bike back to the dealer you bought it from for warranty service. My son, who lives in Austin, Texas, bought his Vitplien 701 in Houston. Of course he had problems with it, but the Houston dealer called the Austin dealer and that is where he brought the bike for service.

@david donne. It is perfectly fine to check the oil when the bike is cold and bring the level to the halfway mark while the bike is upright. I find there is no difference in oil level when the bike is cold or when it is hot, but been allowed to sit for 5 or 10 min. to allow the oil to drain down.

Checking cold vs hot makes absolutely no sense. Gravity wins every time.
